Roundtable 100 list sparks heated debate: Shopify overtakes Apple by 31 places
This week, The Roundtable 100 surprised investors with analyst rankings: Shopify Inc. (Nasdaq: SHOP) ranks higher than Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) is 31 places higher. While Shopify is popular among startups seeking to gain their first customers, Apple is known around the world for its highly sought after electronic gadget product line.
Shopify's business overview with Apple
Shopify was founded in 2006 and is a popular e-commerce platform that allows companies to launch, operate and expand online stores. Whether it's Tesla or Red Bull, Shopify has proven to be of great practical value to many companies. The US$216 billion company is particularly popular among start-ups trying to reach their first customers.
In contrast, Apple is the world's second-largest company by market value after NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA). Apple was founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne and was originally called Apple Computer. The technology giant is known for its product lines such as iPhones, iPads, Macs and AirPods. The 50-year-old company has a market value of approximately US$5 trillion. However, in the Roundtable 100 analyst rankings, its position is lower than Shopify's 31st place.
Ranking Logic Analysis: Growth potential is better than current scale
The "Roundtable Top 100" list released by TheStreet ranks 100 publicly traded technology growth assets. Committee analysts rate each asset in five dimensions: team, safety, value, innovation and market dominance, and the average score constitutes its comprehensive ranking.
This week, analysts rated Shopify 59 out of 100, while Apple scored only 49. In this ranking, Shopify rose one place to 55th, while the technology giant slipped three places to 86th.
At first glance, this ranking may seem unreasonable, but once you understand the rating standards of the Roundtable 100 analysts, everything is solved. Analysts do not rank companies based on the peaks they have reached, but rather look at their future growth potential. This week, they determined that Shopify has greater growth potential than Apple, resulting in the above ranking.
Emerging forces worthy of attention: MicroStrategy
Analysts of the "Top 100" update their comprehensive rankings every Friday and continue to look for new selected companies. One of the high-profile companies is MicroStrategy (Nasdaq: MSTR). Led by billionaire Michael Saylor, the company started out as a commercial software company, but decided in 2020 to transform itself into a proxy for Bitcoin (BTC).
Its business model-selling new shares every week to raise money to buy more bitcoin (if money allows)-is groundbreaking. Several companies, including Metaplane and Twenty One Capital, have followed this strategy to build their Bitcoin balance sheets. Although its performance fluctuates with Bitcoin prices, MicroStrategy remains the world's largest enterprise-level Bitcoin holder. The latest data shows that it holds 848,000 bitcoins on its balance sheet.
Although the company's share price has fallen more than 50% in the past 12 months, it has recouped its losses this year with its recent gains.
