DATA Network joins hands with Sui and Walrus to expand the AI training data supply chain (October 12

The data needed for these models is not located on open networks, but in people's hands: for example, nurses describing a patient's overnight experience in their own words, vehicle-mounted camera footage of a rainy commute in Jakarta, two-handed operation by factory technicians while diagnosing a problem, or customer calls in Bengali. This data is personal and often regulated, and its ownership belongs to the creator himself.

Trace was launched by the DATA Foundation in June 2026 and was created specifically for this type of data. It records the source of each contribution and the rights attached to it, and settles the remuneration to the contributor. Since its launch, Trace has registered more than 250 million contributions and currently processes an average of more than 3 million receipts per day. Applications connected to Trace include Kled (the largest user-authorized human data market with more than 1.5 billion records), Numo and Oto, which has authorized data to cutting-edge AI laboratories and robotics companies.

Why Sui and Walrus

Sui treats each asset as a programmable object, allowing the dataset and its licenses to be managed on the chain like tokens. Independent transactions are executed in parallel and settled in less than a second, giving the network the ability to process millions of registrations every day. Walrus extends this capability to large files: It efficiently stores huge AI data sets and ensures that only licensed buyers can read the data. No other network natively integrates storage, access control, and ownership tracking capabilities within a single ecosystem and provides verifiable computing power.

Trace now brings a flagship rights-clearing data supply that meets the needs of AI laboratories that currently authorize data to it. The result of this integration will be stronger source assurance and tamper-proof evidence. Currently, Trace records can only prove when a file was registered, but with the introduction of Walrus, Trace will be able to hold an encrypted and immutable copy of the contribution file itself as a reference guarantee. The hash value of the record can be regenerated from the data itself rather than from the metadata provided by the application, and any subsequent file processing can be checked against the original file.

This upgrade is supported by long-term strategic investment. The Sui Foundation invested US$30 million in DATA Network, establishing its largest institutional stake in the network, consistent with the continued positions of PIP Labs and the DATA Foundation. To further strengthen this synergy, SY Lee, Chairman of Poseidon and CEO of PIP Labs, joined the Sui Foundation as a strategic consultant.

Protocol upgrade details

DATA Network will be upgraded to a protocol running natively by Sui, and its independent chain will be retired.$ DATA will continue to be a token under the DATA Agreement on Sui, migrating on a 1:1 ratio, with the holder's economic benefits and governance rights at least equal to the current level. Locked and vested positions remain unchanged. At the same time, Walrus became the default storage tier for DATA Foundation applications.
