DATA Network migrates AI data protocol to Sui, receives US$30 million support from the Sui Foundatio

DATA Network announced the migration of artificial intelligence data protocols to the Sui blockchain and received US$30 million investment from the Sui Foundation.

Recently, DATA Network, formerly known as the Story Foundation, announced plans to retire its independently running blockchain and migrate its protocols used for artificial intelligence training data to the Sui blockchain. This transformation was strongly supported by a US$30 million investment from the Sui Foundation.

Migration to Sui and protocol upgrades

As part of this strategic adjustment, the Trace registration system launched by DATA Network in June this year will be integrated into the Sui ecosystem. Trace aims to record the data sources used to train artificial intelligence models and their authorization rights. In the Sui blockchain ecosystem, the native decentralized storage platform Walrus will become the default storage layer for applications built and operated by the DATA Foundation and its partners.

Representatives of the DATA Foundation pointed out that maintaining a dedicated blockchain for a single use case, such as AI data tracking, imposes a significant cost burden. These fees include blockchain operation and maintenance expenses that are typically required to manage verification nodes, ensure network security, and maintain overall infrastructure.

According to a spokesperson for the DATA Foundation, building a storage and access control system of the same size would be equivalent to redeveloping the existing Walrus and Seal functions in the Sui ecosystem. The spokesperson emphasized that leveraging Sui's infrastructure, especially through Walrus, can simplify operational processes and eliminate redundancy. With the Trace registration system exceeding 270 million registrations in approximately four months, it is no longer practical to continue using custom blockchains.

The Sui Foundation is one of the pillars of the Sui blockchain ecosystem and is committed to promoting the development of decentralized applications and infrastructure. Although the Sui Foundation recently invested $30 million to support the migration of DATA Network, the DATA Foundation said the funding is seen as a separate aspect of the broader partnership.

Background: Sui and Walrus

Sui: is a Proof-of-Stake Layer 1 blockchain developed by Mysten Labs. It focuses on providing high-throughput and low-latency services for decentralized applications, with features such as parallel transaction execution and object-centric data storage.

Walrus: is located within the Sui ecosystem and provides scalable decentralized file storage services suitable for applications that handle large-scale data volumes.

Transition schedule and ongoing operations

Until the migration to Sui is completed, DATA Network's current blockchain will continue to remain operational. To ensure a smooth transition for users and partners, a detailed migration schedule and asset holder conversion plan will be released before the migration begins. The DATA Foundation stated that the network will continue to operate until planned upgrades are finalized and provides comprehensive migration details before switching.

This decision follows DATA Foundation's recent strategic shift from intellectual property licensing to building a comprehensive AI training data technology stack. Its partners confirmed that the migration of the Trace registration system and storage tier changes to Walrus are critical to optimizing operations within the rapidly growing Sui ecosystem.
