How Core allows Bitcoin holders to vote for verifiers without giving up the token

Pledge mechanism without relinquishing ownership

Core DAO builds a mechanism that allows Bitcoin holders to participate in validator elections without having to transfer Bitcoin out of the Bitcoin network. The process relies on CheckLockTimeVerify (CLTV), a script opcode that has been a native part of the Bitcoin protocol since 2015.

CLTV is a Bitcoin scripting operation that restricts transaction output from being spent until it reaches a specified absolute time or block height. The entire process does not involve cross-chain bridges, token encapsulation or third-party custody.

Bitcoin holders can temporarily lock their bitcoins out of spending by creating transactions with CLTV scripts, while embedding metadata that allows the Core Network to recognize their participation in consensus. This metadata specifies the validators the holder wishes to support, and the address to which $CORE rewards should be sent. Bitcoin itself remains in the holder's wallet.

Bitcoin commissions are made through Core's self-managed products to obtain pledge rewards without any asset transfers or cross-linking to the Core blockchain or verifiers. Even if the verifier or the Core blockchain fails, the user's assets are still entirely in his own custody and can be redeemed on the Bitcoin network after the time lock expires.

Relay, Reward and Renewal Mechanism

Once time-locked transactions are broadcast, the relay scans for these locked transactions in the Bitcoin network, reads the embedded verifier selection information, and updates the election weights on the Core accordingly.

When Bitcoin holders pledge through Core, they are essentially participating in the election of Core verifiers. When the validator designated by the pledger is selected, the validator will help protect the Core blockchain and receive $CORE token rewards, most of which will be distributed to the Bitcoin pledger who elected it.

The voting rights granted by a time lock are proportional to the number of bitcoins locked. The more bitcoins you pledge, the greater the influence you have in the validator's choice. Rewards are then increased proportionately and stopped at the end of the lock-up period. Core's documentation clearly states that there is no automatic renewal mechanism: after the lock-up period ends, Bitcoin returns to its expendable status; to continue to pledge, users must create a new time lock.

The pledge mechanism constitutes two-thirds of the weight in the Core Satoshi Plus Consensus, allowing both Bitcoin and $CORE token holders to help protect the network and receive rewards. For long-term holders who prefer to remain on the Bitcoin blockchain, the model provides a way to revitalize idle funds without introducing new trust assumptions.
