According to the proposed activation process, ENS will cease accepting new .eth domain name registrations through its original registrar before the upgraded system becomes available. Johnson explained that this transition requires final synchronization of existing domain records, ensuring that ownership is retained when ENSv2 is launched.

The activation process will consist of five stages: first, the new smart contract will be deployed, and existing domain names will be reserved. ENS Labs noted that although the ENSv2 contract has been deployed to the Ethereum main network, the new registrar has not yet been authorized to handle registration requests.

Once the DAO approves and implements this proposal, existing registrars will stop accepting new domain names. Subsequently, ENS Labs will synchronize domain names that have been registered or renewed since the initial snapshot, ensuring that these records are incorporated into the system before the upgraded registrar takes effect. Johnson estimated that the process from initial freezing to the activation of ENSv2 may take several hours. During this period, users will not be able to register new .eth names through any system. Other naming operations will continue to be handled using the current protocol, although the proposal indicates that renewals during the transition period may face temporary restrictions.

According to the proposal, after final synchronization is completed, ENS Labs will activate the new registrar. The team will then update the Universal Resolver to direct domain lookups through ENSv2, allowing applications and wallets to use the upgraded naming system.

Existing ENS domain name holders will continue to own their domains

For users who already have .eth domain names, Johnson indicated that no immediate action is required during this upgrade. Existing domain names will continue to be resolved using the current registry system, and owners can maintain their ownership through the standard renewal process.

"If you own a .eth domain name and take no action, it will still function properly," Johnson wrote in his proposal.

ENS Labs has reserved space in the updated registry for existing eligible .eth domain names, available for use by their current owners. This arrangement allows owners to move their domains to ENSv2 at any time through the official ENS application, with no fixed deadline for migration.

The upgrade also includes changes to the domain expiration rules. In ENSv1, expired .eth domain names had a 90-day grace period, while ENSv2 has shortened this period to 28 days. To maintain the same expiration timeline during the migration period, domains that are migrated will have their expiration dates extended by 62 days. Domains that exceed the grace period before migration will not be reserved. According to Johnson, such domains will become registeredable through the updated system.

ENSv2 introduces new mechanisms for domain control and permission management

ENSv2 replaces the flat structure of the original registry with a connected registry system, giving domain owners more control over their names and subdomains. In the current design, ENS stores ownership information, resolver details, and other records in a shared registry. Over time, additional contracts will be introduced to manage permissions and advanced naming functions.

Johnson explained that the new architecture will allow individual domains to maintain their own subdomain registries. Owners can choose custom registries and resolver implementations, and permissions can be assigned based on specific roles. For example, users can grant others the right to update subdomain resolvers, but prevent them from transferring ownership. This system aims to provide more precise access control, without relying on the existing NameWrapper structure for every operation.

The proposal indicates that developers need to update their applications and integrations to work with ENSv2 through a common resolver. ENS Labs stated that most integrations are already ready, although coordination between all parties involved is still necessary during the transition process.

The transfer of administrative control

Administrative control is another part of the activation process. Once ENSv2 is fully operational, ENS Labs plans to transfer any remaining privileged roles under the upgrade contract to the DAO, thereby relinquishing those rights. After the transfer, the DAO will have control over ENSv2 through its governance contract. Registration fees will continue to flow into the system controlled by the DAO, and the relevant contracts have been configured to recognize the DAO as the owner of those fees.

This upgrade follows the reorganization of the ENS DAO Foundation approved in August 2026. This reorganization established a five-member governance committee and expanded the fund’s operational responsibilities.

The ENS DAO must approve the upgrade before it can be activated

Before ENSv2 can be launched through the proposed process, Johnson’s draft must go through the formal blockchain-based governance voting process. The ENS DAO requires that the proposed changes meet certain thresholds in terms of participation and receive support from enough voters holding voting tokens.

According to the official governance documents, for a proposal to be implemented, it requires the approval of a majority vote, which corresponds to 1% of the ENS’ total voting capacity, or 1 million affirmative votes. Once voting begins, token holders have seven days to participate. If the proposal is approved, implementation will still be subject to a two-day lock-up period. The governance system utilizes this waiting period as a buffer until the approved contract changes take effect.

The proposed actions include 15 smart contract calls, all of which will be executed as transactions. These actions involve changes to registrar permissions, contract ownership, parser configurations, and the removal of existing registrars. Johnson noted that if any issues arise before the activation of ENSv2, the initial freeze on registrars can be reversed through another DAO proposal. However, once users begin migrating their names, the proposal indicates that these migrations cannot be reversed using the same process.

The governance announcement from October continues to list the activation of ENSv2 as an unresolved issue, with discussions ongoing and no completed votes yet recorded. ENS Labs has not announced a precise date for the mainnet activation. The team expects to release transaction records and verification scripts after completing the administrative transition, so that community members can verify whether ENS Labs no longer holds any privileges regarding the upgraded contracts.
