The Federal Reserve raised the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on September 16, bringing it to 3.75%-4.00%. The minutes of the meeting indicate that most policymakers believe it is appropriate to raise rates again before the end of the year. However, the final decision still depends on upcoming economic data.

In addition to Polymarket, the FedWatch tool from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange also reflects changes in market expectations: the likelihood of a rate hike in October has increased from 22.1% before the release of inflation data to 43.7%, an increase of 21.6 percentage points. As a result, the yield on two-year U.S. bonds rose, the dollar strengthened, and U.S. stock prices fell.

Next up, we will pay attention to the Producer Price Index for September, which will be released on October 15, as well as the Personal Consumption Expenditures data for September, which will be released on October 29. It’s worth noting that the PCE data will be released one day after the policy meeting. Although rising borrowing costs could affect the liquidity of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, the inflation report did not include any data related to crypto asset prices. Currently, keeping the interest rates unchanged remains the most likely outcome for October.
