Hard forks close the door for malicious verifiers
Coredao_Org completed an emergency hard fork upgrade on September 3, resuming the issuance of pledged rewards after a brief but disruptive verifier incident. The upgrade was in response to previous incidents where the validator claimed to have received more $CORE tokens than specified in the agreement, prompting Core DAO to coordinate an emergency hard fork.
This issue has been brought under control on September 1, 2026, and only affects reward allocation, and does not affect user funds or network security. The fix takes the form of an emergency hard fork coordinated directly with the Core validator set and is structurally forward-only upgrade, which means that no transactions have been rolled back and user assets are not at risk.
The project party has not disclosed how many validators have exploited the vulnerability, how long the exception reward claim lasted, and the total amount of $CORE involved. A comprehensive technical post-mortem analysis report is still pending.
On the eve of the upgrade, many exchanges such as Coinbase and Bithumb restricted the recharge and withdrawal operations of $CORE for security reasons. Among them, Coinbase suspended the sending and receiving functions of the Core network;Bithumb and Coinone suspended deposit and withdrawal services; and Bitget stopped accessing and accessing $CORE due to wallet maintenance.
Once it was confirmed that the hard fork was operating stably, deposit activity on the exchange quickly returned to a high level.
Market reacts strongly to reward restoration
The return of normal pledge rewards triggered an immediate market reaction. According to CoinMarketCap data, in the 24 hours after the upgrade,$CORE's transaction volume surged by more than 170%, and the token price increased by about 4% that day. The restoration of pledge incentives and the resumption of exchange recharge activities appear to be the main catalysts for the surge in trading volume.
$CORE has a hard cap of 2.1 billion coins, of which approximately 40% are allocated to node mining rewards, which will be gradually released over an 81-year emission cycle. This makes the integrity of the reward mechanism central to the token's long-term value proposition. The rapid resolution of verifier vulnerabilities and the smooth execution of hard forks have enhanced market confidence in the network's governance capabilities and response mechanisms at least in the short term.
Core DAO proactively fixes verifier reward vulnerabilities, reflecting a responsible governance model. Although the temporary suspension of $CORE on major platforms has caused some inconvenience, transparent handling of this issue is expected to strengthen the credibility of the network in the long run.
