SUI From Apple Compiler Lab to the Cryptographic Frontier
@EvanWeb3 spent nearly a decade at Apple before co-founding one of the most watched Layer-1 blockchains in the cryptocurrency space. He joined Apple in 2005 and gradually rose to senior manager, leading the LLVM backend team responsible for static and runtime compilation of CPUs and GPUs, Swift performance optimization, and hardware architecture exploration.
LLVM (low-level virtual machine) is a set of compiler tools responsible for converting application code into instructions that can be executed by the chip. In 2012, Cheng and the project founders won the prestigious ACM Software System Award for his contribution to LLVM, one of the most respected honors in the computing field.
After leaving Apple, Cheng joined Meta (formerly Facebook), where he led the Novi Research team, which is working on developing cutting-edge blockchain technologies, including the Diem blockchain and the Move programming language. After the Diem project ran aground, the core engineers left Meta and built Sui using the Move programming language originally developed at Meta.
Founding Mysten Labs and Sui Network
Mysten Labs was established at the end of 2021 and was co-founded by five senior engineers from the Meta Diem project: Evan Cheng, Adeniyi Abiodun, Sam Blackshear, George Danezis and Kostas Chalkias. They drew on the experience accumulated at Meta and the technical achievements of the Move language, and built a permission-free public blockchain around these technologies.
