Bitcoin fell below $84,000, and long liquidation reached $487 million

Key Facts

Bitcoin fell 1.7% in 24 hours to $84,071, hitting an intraday low of about $83,800 late Tuesday night. According to CoinGlass data, the total amount of cryptocurrency clearing in the past 24 hours reached US$555.6 million, of which US$487.2 million was cleared for long positions.

Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, said the decline was mainly due to profit-taking and a chain reaction caused by the forced liquidation of long positions after open contracts and funding rates accumulated.

Liquidation speeds up sharply

Forced selling accelerated significantly in the hours before reaching the low. Of the 24-hour liquidation total, approximately $429.8 million (including approximately $415.3 million in long positions) were liquidated in just the first four hours.

Forced closing occurs when a trader's position is caused by a loss and the margin is insufficient to meet the maintenance requirements. Because not all exchanges disclose their data, public data tracking liquidations often underestimate the actual size.

During the same 24-hour window, Ethereum (ETH) fell 3.3% to US$2,612. The CoinMarketCap Fear and Greed Index read 63, which is in the "greedy" range, down from 67 the previous day.

Analyst View: What caused the decline?

Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, said the correction was "mainly driven by profit-taking and forced long liquidations, after the accumulation of open interest and funding rates has left the market vulnerable to deleveraging." John added that softening sentiment-reflected in a decline in the fear and greed index-coupled with the relatively weak performance of the altcoins, further increased downward pressure.

Jeff Ko, chief analyst of ViaBTC, gave a more optimistic view. "Don't forget that Bitcoin actually rose by about 40% in the third quarter, while spot ETF inflows reached $6.5 billion," Ko said. "If the $82,000 to 83,000 region continues to stabilize, I think in the current price volatility, this is still a fairly positive consolidation pattern after the September breakthrough."

These two very different views point to different sides of the same underlying market structure: a market with high leverage entering October is digesting how much leverage it needs to be lifted to stabilize prices after a strong third quarter rally. A preview of this was provided last week, when Bitcoin fell below $84,000 and crypto bulls lost $392 million. Whether this latest trend is resolved with support levels of US$82,000 to US$83,000, as expected by Ko, depends on whether there is room for follow-up to the deleveraging process described by Dominick John.
