Robinhood spent US$25 million to buy Bitcoin and incorporate it into corporate coffers, focusing on deeper encryption product layout

Robinhood has joined the ranks of companies that incorporate Bitcoin into corporate coffers, adding a new Bitcoin position worth US$25 million to its balance sheet. Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood's senior vice president and general manager of cryptocurrency and international businesses, confirmed the acquisition in an interview with The Block's "The Starting Block" program. The announcement comes as Kerrat is participating in Token2049, a well-known crypto industry event held in Singapore.

The Bitcoin purchase is seen as a symbolic move

Kerbrat explained that Robinhood decided to hold Bitcoin to align his vision with the broader crypto community. He emphasized that given Robinhood's valuation of approximately $100 billion, the $25 million Bitcoin purchase would have relatively little overall impact on it. According to Kerbrat, the position "will not change the company's current established trajectory."

Based on Tuesday's closing price of US$112 and a market value of approximately US$100 billion, Robinhood's Bitcoin purchase accounted for approximately 0.025% of its total market value. In contrast, Strategy, led by Michael Saylor and known for its aggressive hoarding of bitcoins, purchased 334 bitcoins for $28.7 million between September 28 and October 4, increasing its total holdings to 840,000.

As a commission-free trading platform, Robinhood allows users to invest in stocks, crypto assets and other financial products. Although this is the first time the company has purchased bitcoins on its own, the amount of bitcoins it holds on behalf of users is actually much larger. Arkham data shows that Robinhood holds approximately 185,232 bitcoins for clients, worth approximately US$15.57 billion. This latest purchase is more a gesture to the crypto community than a major shift in corporate treasury strategy.

The focus remains on the supply of encryption products

Robinhood's core investment in the encryption field continues to be product-driven. Last week, the company announced that it would soon launch a perpetual contract trading service for eligible U.S. users. The service covers multiple cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano, Chainlink and HYPE. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev described the move as marking a "new chapter in U.S. derivatives trading."

Robinhood is launching the United States 'first truly perpetual contract with no expiration date and profits and losses settled every 15 minutes. This marks a new era in derivatives trading in the United States.

In July this year, Robinhood's blockchain network, known as the "Robinhood Chain", was officially launched on the Layer 2 technology stack of Arbitrum. According to DefiLlama, the chain's total lock-in value (TVL) this week has reached $1.05 billion. Kerbrat highlighted Robinhood's huge user reach, pointing out that it has 28 million funded accounts, 27 million of which are located in the United States. He described this customer base as a distributed advantage unmatched by a small number of Layer 2 platforms.

Tokenized stocks have also become a key focus area for Robinhood. Kerbrat said the trading volume of stock tokens is already close to the threshold set by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for innovation exemptions for tokenized stocks.

Micro Dictionary: Robinhood Chain is a blockchain network developed by Robinhood that uses Arbitrum technology to provide lower fees and faster settlement speeds for decentralized applications.

Bitcoin prices stabilize around US$84,000, and market activity increases

Robinhood's involvement in corporate Bitcoin positions coincides with a period of heightened volatility in the entire crypto market. On October 6, due to large-scale liquidations in the crypto industry, the total liquidations of long-term short positions soared to US$487 million, causing the Bitcoin price to briefly fall below US$84,000. Since then, prices have stabilized around $84,000.

Analysts believe that Robinhood's first $25 million purchase will not have a direct impact on Bitcoin prices. They pointed out that the more important thing is whether the company will continue to accumulate Bitcoin or launch a regular purchase policy that is tied to crypto revenue. Currently, Robinhood's crypto risk exposure is mainly reflected in its product suite and client bitcoin hosted on behalf of customers, rather than its own balance sheet.
