Reuters survey: 63% of respondents believe it is inappropriate for Trump and his family to profit from cryptocurrencies
A Reuters survey showed that 63% of respondents believe it is inappropriate for President Trump and his family to profit from cryptocurrencies, while 32% of respondents believe it is not inappropriate. Further breaking down the respondents, 69% of Republicans believe that profits are reasonable, while as many as 92% of Democrats believe that profits are unreasonable.
Survey Results
This national survey was conducted by Reuters and Ipsos from August 14 to August 17 and interviewed a total of 1166 adults. The survey's margin of error is about three percentage points. The investigation has reignited ethical controversy over President Trump and his family's cryptocurrency investments during their tenure. Understandably, views are divided based on political leanings-Republican supporters believe the gains are reasonable and Democratic supporters say they are inappropriate.
"New Reuters/Ipsos poll: 69% of Americans (including 48% of Trump's own voters) believe his business interests are influencing his presidential decisions. His cryptocurrency business alone earned $1.4 billion last year."
The poll also asked respondents about President Trump's private business interests, and showed that 69% believed that the president's business interests influenced his decisions. The survey only measures public attitudes towards President Trump's business interests and does not assert or confirm whether he violated the law or influenced government policy. The White House has also consistently denied allegations of conflict of interest. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said: "There is no conflict of interest. The president will only act in the best interest of the American public."
More than $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency revenue
President Trump's annual financial disclosure report was released in June. A Reuters analysis shows that President Trump reported revenue related to cryptocurrency companies exceeded $1.4 billion in 2025. However, this figure is reported revenue and not the current value of President Trump's cryptocurrency holdings. According to a report by the Crypto News website, the disclosure contained more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency-related revenue, which included "World Free Finance" and "Trump Memin."
Companies linked to the Trump family have received nearly $800 million from Free World Finance, including more than $520 million in revenue related to token sales and more than $250 million in revenue related to the sale of various commercial interests. President Trump also reported $635 million in revenue from licensing agreements related to "TRUMP" tokens. The revenue flows through multiple companies, with some of the proceeds distributed to Trump family members and business partners.
Ethical controversy continues to ferment
The survey comes as lawmakers remain divided on whether cryptocurrency legislation should restrict officials and their families from investing in crypto-related businesses. Ethics provisions have become a major obstacle in the negotiation process to push cryptocurrency legislation through Congress. In addition,"World Freedom Finance" was conditionally approved and the proposed establishment of "World Freedom Trust Company" as a national trust bank, which further exacerbated the controversy. Congressional supervision and conditionalities of the proposed trust bank will be an important test of whether President Trump's duties as president of the United States are separated from the family's business interests.
