TRUMP California Governor signs new bill: Ban public officials from issuing meme coins and strengthen efforts to crack down on cryptocurrency crimes
On September 27, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation prohibiting the state's public officials from issuing "meme coins" and giving California law enforcement new powers to pursue cryptocurrency-related crimes. According to a statement released by the governor's office, Newsom pointed the finger at the signing ceremony at the memes issued by President Donald Trump, which caused billions of dollars in losses to its buyers. The signing is part of a broader package of bills that Newsom describes as a move aimed at cracking down on corruption in public officials and holding cryptocurrency scammers accountable.
Scope of the New Bill's Prohibition
Assembly Bill 2409, written by State Congressman Avelino Valencia, prohibits California public officials and covered public employees from issuing memocoins, and prohibits digital asset service providers from listing specific memocoins issued by or with cooperating federal, state or local officials that were launched on or after January 1, 2027. The measure broadly defines "issuance" to include making tokens available for purchase, donation or value exchange by the public. The scope of application includes elected and appointed officials, state legislators, and members of government boards, committees and panels. No objections were recorded when the bill was passed by the Legislature. The House voted unanimously with a vote of 77 to 0 and the Senate voted 40 to 0, and was subsequently submitted to the governor's desk.
