Coinbase brings regulated crypto derivatives to Canada

Coinbase launches cryptocurrency futures in Canada with a maximum leverage of 10 times

Coinbase announced that its latest launch makes it the first mainstream cryptocurrency platform to provide native cryptocurrency futures in Canada. Eligible users can now trade perpetual contracts and term futures related to Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL) and other digital assets.

Filling the regulatory gap

Global cryptocurrency derivatives trading volume is about 4.4 times that of spot trading, but before that, Canadian users lacked regulated market channels to participate in these contracts. Prior to the launch, traders seeking exposure to cryptocurrency derivatives were mostly forced to turn to offshore or unregulated platforms.

These products are available through Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM). CFM is a futures commission dealer registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and operates in Canada under the foreign dealer and futures commission dealer exemption clause.

Product Details

The first batch of products covers 23 cryptocurrency perpetual and term futures, 5 commodity futures, and the Coinbase 50 (COIN50) index. Commodity contracts include gold, silver and crude oil. All contracts are mini-sized to reduce initial capital requirements, provide up to 10 times leverage, and support long or short operations. Participation is limited to customers who meet the platform qualification requirements.

The launch in Canada is part of Coinbase's broader "all-round exchange" strategy, which aims to integrate crypto products with traditional financial products on the same platform. Coinbase Canada has operated as a restricted trader since April 2024 and is currently applying for trader status with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (CIRO).

Prior to the launch of derivatives, Coinbase just announced an expansion of its partnership with Webull Canada to provide hosting and trading infrastructure for Webull Canada's crypto business through its "crypto-as-a-service" platform. In addition, the exchange is also actively deploying in other regions: in early 2026, it launched futures trading in 26 European countries; in July of the same year, it obtained the MiFID license from the UK, thus opening the door to providing stocks and derivatives trading in the country.
