The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange issued an emergency security warning: a necessary guide to prevent phishing attacks
The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange recently advised customers to remain highly vigilant due to the recent increase in phishing attacks targeting cryptocurrency investors. Here are the steps necessary to help you better protect yourself from such criminals.
Think twice
Binance explained that attackers would send fake "security alert" text messages to trick users into clicking on malicious links, which could lead to catastrophic financial losses. The team revealed that such scams are often disguised as seemingly official notices, such as "Your account settings have changed" or "Suspicious login detected." In addition, these messages may contain shortened links requiring users to "verify immediately," creating a sense of urgency and prompting victims to take action without thinking.
The company clarified: "Please remember: Binance will never ask you to click a link in a text message to 'verify' or 'protect' your account."
Binance also outlines three key steps to enhance protection:
First,, never click on unfamiliar links; instead, use the Binance Verify feature to check their legitimacy.
Second , users must enable the "white list of withdrawal addresses" in the security settings. The instructions state: "Once enabled, funds can only flow to addresses you pre-approved."
Third , users should enable "anti-phishing codes" and keep in mind that real Binance emails always contain the user's unique code. If there is no such code in the message, it means that it is not from an official exchange.
Last but not least, Binance recommends that users who receive suspicious text messages or have clicked on links immediately contact official customer service support through the app.
Binance's recent updates
The company has been active recently, removing some cryptocurrencies that no longer meet standard requirements and adding other currencies to comply with the latest market trends.
Last month, Binance announced the termination of all services with ICON (ICX), Secret (SCRT) and Storj (STORJ). The removal took effect yesterday (September 3), and the price of the affected tokens fell sharply immediately after the announcement. This reaction is normal because as the largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance's cessation of support will lead to reduced liquidity, reduced availability and damage to reputation. Previously, in June, a similar decline was observed when the company announced its farewell to Alchemix (ALCX), Ardor (ARDR), NFPrompt Token (NFP) and Marlin (POND).
Earlier this week, the exchange added PONS to its Binance Alpha sector (an early-discovery hub that showcases emerging cryptocurrencies that may emerge before they receive official support). After the news broke, the price of the popular altcoin rose and continued its strong performance. In the past two weeks, its price has soared by about 1,500% and its market value is close to $500 million.
