G7 warns of quantum threats requiring action, crypto industry weighs fixes

G7 warns: The quantum computing threat is imminent, and the public and private sectors need to immediately initiate cryptographic migration

The G7 (G7) is urging governments and companies to immediately prepare for cybersecurity attacks based on quantum computing. The organization warned that migration of the systems could take years and sensitive data is currently at risk.

In a newly released report, the G7 Cybersecurity Working Group, composed of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, pointed out that quantum computing not only poses a threat to critical infrastructure operators, but also poses a major challenge to the overall security and economic interests of public and private organizations.

The

report wrote: "Although the exact timetable is uncertain, several recent developments indicate that the development of quantum computers capable of cracking widely used public key cryptography mechanisms and threatening the security of digital infrastructure has become an inevitable trend."

To this end, the working group strongly recommends that organizations adopt post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to withstand the dual attacks of classical computing and quantum computing. If protective measures are not taken in time, the data stolen and stored today may be decrypted by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer in the future. Not only can this lead to data breaches, it can also undermine digital signatures and allow attackers to impersonate their identities, exposing security vulnerabilities in the enterprise and its supply chain.

The report emphasized: "We recognize that the transition to the PCT is not an issue that individual organizations can resolve in isolation, but is a collective action. This transformation can only be achieved through early participation, coordinated planning and informed decision-making by the public and private sectors."

Potential impact and response in the cryptocurrency field

Although the report does not directly mention cryptocurrency, it is the same type of public key cryptography that protects blockchain wallets and authorizes transactions. Current quantum computers are not yet able to crack Bitcoin's encryption algorithm, but developers are considering post-quantum solutions, including BIP-360, to allow the network to support new signature mechanisms.

Bitcoin's decentralized governance structure makes this transition even more complex. Any major security changes require extensive support from developers, miners, businesses and users. In addition, Bitcoin holders also need a way to move funds from fragile addresses without disrupting network operations.

Ethereum researchers are planning to replace several cryptographic components used by accounts, validators and applications. One recent proposal aims to rebuild Ethereum's deposit contracts to support the large size keys needed for post-quantum systems.

In contrast, researchers suggest that Solana may have a simpler migration path because it uses EdDSA signatures. The Solana Foundation has tested post-quantum signatures on test networks and introduced optional hash-based vaults to protect funds.

Policy recommendations and future outlook

The G7 Cybersecurity Working Group called on governments to support relevant research, establish public-private partnerships, develop national-level PQC strategies, and incorporate quantum security into procurement requirements. At the same time, the organization recommends that organizations identify critical systems and adopt quantum security products in planned upgrades to control costs.

The report concluded: "To strengthen collective resilience and protect confidential data, supply chains and critical systems, public and private organizations must act together immediately. The transition to PQC is a key cornerstone of building a secure and resilient digital future."
