XRP Cryptocurrency user claims 11,272 XRPs were stolen after responding to a seemingly legitimate Google security alert
A cryptocurrency holder claims that 11,272 XRPs were stolen from her account after she responded to a seemingly legitimate security alert from Google. The incident was shared on the X platform by cryptocurrency enthusiast Paulatalkscrypto, who posted a video in which the woman described the alleged attack and warned other cryptocurrency users to be more cautious.
According to the woman, the incident occurred around 7:09 p.m. She said she received an email that appeared to be from Google warning her that someone was trying to log in to her account. She said the message looked authentic and led her to a Google site after she clicked on a link. [TAG
She explained that she refused the login attempt and received a call from the California area code. The caller claimed to be following up on the attempted login and told her that someone was trying to gain access to her account.
Suspected attack follows Google security alert
The woman said the caller directed her to take steps to protect her account. She admitted that some aspects of the interaction were somewhat unusual, but said the communication came from Google.
Later, she received an email related to her Ledger device. According to her description, the email was received less than 20 minutes after the previous interaction occurred.
She explained that she stores cryptocurrency in her Ledger hardware wallet rather than leaving it in the online environment. She also discussed the 24-word recovery phrases associated with the device, emphasizing that users should generally keep these words secret because they can provide access to their cryptocurrency.
However, she claimed that the attacker somehow obtained information related to her Ledger account, accessing and clearing one of her crypto accounts.
The woman claimed that 11,272 XRPs were her pension savings.
The alleged theft involved 11,272 XRPs, which she said were her financial savings that were originally intended to support her future. In the video, she is emotional as she explains the personal impact of losing funds.
She said that about two and a half years ago, she lost her fingers and toes due to a kidney stone related incident and has been relying on the XRP she holds as a pension savings pending a settlement.
The woman also expressed belief in the long-term potential of XRP, saying she had expected the cryptocurrency to play an important role in cross-border payments.
She said the loss was particularly painful because she accumulated 11,272 XRPs in the hope that their future value would provide financial security.
Warning to other XRP holders
Paulatalkscrypto's post highlights the risks XRP holders face from complex social engineering and impersonation attempts. In the video, the woman repeatedly emphasized that before the alleged theft, all the communications she received appeared to be legal.
Her statement did not independently confirm how the attackers accessed her XRP, nor could it confirm whether the communications actually came from Google or Ledger. However, her warnings focused on the importance of maintaining a high degree of vigilance for unexpected security messages, phone calls and links.
The woman ends the video by urging other cryptocurrency users to be cautious, emphasizing that the communications involved in her case appear to be legal, even though she believes they were part of the attack.
