David Schwartz, former technical director of Ripple: XRP is expected to surpass Bitcoin in market value
David Schwartz, former technical director of Ripple and one of the main architects of the XRP ledger, said that XRP may surpass Bitcoin in market value in the future. According to Schwartz's analysis, the realization of this scenario does not rely mainly on the sharp depreciation of Bitcoin, but depends on whether XRP can achieve strong growth.
Although this forecast seems challenging due to the current huge market value gap between the two, it is worth noting that XRP once surpassed Ethereum in history. Recently, David Schwartz further elaborated on his view on the Spaces live program on Platform X (formerly Twitter), where he believes that XRP may gain a disproportionately large share of the overall growth of the entire cryptocurrency market.
XRP has the potential and logic to surpass Bitcoin
Schwartz pointed out that compared with Bitcoin, XRP has faster transaction processing speeds and a wider range of application scenarios, which are an important factor in its potential rapid growth. He did not rule out the possibility that XRP surpassed Bitcoin in terms of market value, and emphasized that this development was more likely to stem from a strong increase in XRP's own value than from the collapse of Bitcoin.
Schwartz made it clear in his assessment that although a scenario for XRP to surpass Bitcoin is theoretically possible, this will be mainly based on the significant growth on the XRP side itself.
Historical Price Comparison and Market Valuation Differences
Schwartz also recalled the period when XRP was at extremely low trading levels. He once said that when the price of XRP is about US$0.006, an increase in its price to US$0.25 in his view is a very small probability event. At the same time, he reminded people that Bitcoin had gone through a similar phase: the BTC target of reaching $100 was almost seen as unrealistic at the time.
However, Schwartz emphasized that since the current market value of XRP is much higher than the valuation of Bitcoin at the time, direct price comparisons may be misleading. Therefore, it is more critical to focus on changes in market value rather than purely price numbers.
XRP has surpassed Ethereum's historical precedent
XRP's surpassing large cryptocurrencies in market cap rankings is not the first time that has sparked discussion. Looking back at the end of December 2017, the market value of XRP reached approximately US$86 billion, while the market value of Ethereum during the same period was approximately US$73 billion. This increase makes XRP the world's second largest cryptocurrency in the short term. This historical performance demonstrates XRP's ability to trigger significant changes in rankings during periods of strong markets.
Current market data and future outlook
According to the latest data, the price of XRP is approximately US$1.42, and the market value is approximately US$89.1 billion; while the price of Bitcoin is approximately US$78,693, and the market value is as high as US$1.58 trillion, and it continues to occupy the leading position in the industry. Data shows that the market value of Bitcoin is approximately 17.7 times that of XRP. This means that if XRP is to surpass Bitcoin, it will need to go through an extremely powerful revaluation process to fill this huge gap. In addition, changes in the market value of Bitcoin during this period will also directly affect the target level that XRP needs to achieve.
Conclusion
David Schwartz's remarks have renewed the attention of the XRP community to this highly ambitious scenario. Although XRP has successfully surpassed Ethereum in terms of market value in the past, its current gap of approximately 17.7 times with Bitcoin still poses a major obstacle.
Whether XRP can surpass Bitcoin may depend on its adoption rate, usage of XRP ledgers, institutional needs and the growth of the overall cryptocurrency market size. Therefore, investors should not only pay attention to the price fluctuations of XRP, but also closely track the dynamic changes of these two assets at the market value level.
