The U.S. producer price index (PPI) exceeded expectations in August, and inflationary pressures intensified.
The U.S. producer price index (PPI) rose 5.4% year-on-year in August, higher than the market expectation of 5.3%. Core PPI rose 4.6% year-on-year, in line with market expectations. This new data shows that inflationary pressures re-strengthened on the eve of the announcement of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, pushing up expectations for interest rate hikes.
Bitcoin faced accelerating selling pressure after U.S. PPI data exceeded expectations. BTC fell back to $77,050 on the 15-minute chart, further deepening the intraday decline.
Why did August PPI data surprise the market?
Producer inflation rose to 5.4% year-on-year in August, compared with the market's previous expectation of 5.3%. Even more striking is the rise in core PPI. Core PPI, which excludes food, energy and other volatile items, rose to 4.6%, the highest level since June 2026.
Both the headline PPI and core PPI data for July have been revised upward, which not only means that the August data reflects stronger inflationary pressures, but also shows that the inflation situation in the previous month is equally severe.
Comparison of specific PPI data in August
Core PPI (monthly): Actual value 0.2%| Expected 0.3%| Previous value 0.2%
Core PPI (annual): Actual value 4.6%| Expected 4.6%| Previous value 4.2%
PPI (monthly): Actual value 0.4%| Expected 0.4%| Previous value 0.0%
PPI (annual): Actual value 5.4%| Expected 5.3%| After the previous value of 4.7%
PPI exceeds expectations, will the Federal Reserve raise interest rates?
The data exceeded expectations, making the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision even more critical. Because PPI measures price pressure faced by producers, it is also an important indicator of consumer inflation expectations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) definition, PPI reflects changes in producer purchase prices.
Before the PPI data was released, the market priced the probability of a rate hike at the September meeting at around 60%. Reuters reported that investors believe that PPI and consumer price index (CPI) data released the next day are crucial to the Federal Reserve's decision-making.
With the release of new PPI data, expectations for interest rate hikes are heating up, which may put new pressure on risky assets.

Bitcoin's follow-up focus: CPI data
Although the PPI surprise data is of great significance to the bitcoin and cryptocurrency markets, the most critical data this week-the U.S. consumer price index (CPI) for August has not yet been announced. According to the BLS calendar, CPI data will be released on September 11.
After the release of PPI data today, the market focus has shifted to CPI. If the CPI data is also higher than expected, it will further strengthen market expectations for the Fed's hawkish policies.
With Bitcoin trapped below $80,000 and large investors cautious, the arrival of this data highlights why tomorrow's CPI report needs to be watched closely.
