Nasdaq invests US$100 million in Payward, parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken

Nasdaq has injected US$100 million into its venture capital institution to invest in Payward, parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken. The move marks that the New York Electronic Stock Exchange is further expanding its presence in the field of tokenized assets.

As part of the transaction, Kraken will offer tokenized versions of Nasdaq-listed stocks on its platform, according to an announcement from the exchange operator on Thursday. The investment builds on the partnership announced by Nasdaq and Payward in March this year.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the investment pushed Kraken's parent company's valuation to US$21 billion. Cointelegraph contacted Nasdaq for comment, but did not respond before press time.

The previous month, Nasdaq announced plans to acquire Level Markets to advance its "all-weather" market strategy. A year ago, Nasdaq submitted a proposal on tokenization to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Earlier this month, Kraken partnered with the London Stock Exchange to launch a 24/5 tokenized stock trading service in 2027 that tracks the value of major UK equity products. In April, German exchange operator Deutsche Börse also invested $200 million in Payward, aiming to provide access to a wider range of blockchain-based securities and tokenized investment products.

According to data compiled by RWA.xyz, the current distributed value of tokenized stocks has exceeded $2.9 billion, an increase of 7.4% from the past month.
