Summary

Does this transfer mean Bitcoin is sold? US government-linked addresses transferred 833.6 BTC worth $71.56 million to Coinbase Prime and 40,285 BNB worth $31.63 million through multiple addresses. While moving to Coinbase Prime doesn't equate to an immediate sale (the platform offers custody and trading services), the move has caught the attention of the market. According to a March 2025 executive order, bitcoins deposited in a "strategic bitcoin reserve" cannot be sold. Currently, no federal agency has announced any sales related to this latest transfer.

On-chain data shows that the U.S. government-linked addresses have transferred approximately US$103 million in crypto assets.

According to on-chain analyst EmberCN, addresses associated with the U.S. government have recently transferred large amounts of crypto assets. Specifically, 833.6 BTC units worth US$71.56 million and 40,285 BNB units worth US$31.63 million were transferred out from these addresses, for a total value of approximately US$103 million.

Among them, 833.6 BTC were sent to Coinbase Prime. The 40,285 BNBs went through multiple address jumps and finally stayed at addresses that started with 0xBE7 and ended with 81E.

EmberCN estimates that U.S. government-linked addresses still hold approximately US$28 billion worth of digital assets. The vast majority of them are bitcoins, with approximately 324,000 coins worth approximately US$27.7 billion.

Does switching to Coinbase Prime mean Bitcoin will be sold?

Authorities transferred 3,940 BTC pieces worth approximately US$240 million, and the price of Bitcoin fell by approximately 2%.
  • August 2024: Another 10,000 BTC worth approximately US$594 million was transferred to Coinbase Prime. Bitcoin prices fell 3.6%, although the decline began to appear before the funds arrived.
  • July 2024: A government wallet transferred approximately $2 billion in Bitcoin, and the price fell by approximately 1%.
  • December 2024: Another wallet transferred nearly 20,000 BTC worth approximately US$1.92 billion.

The U.S. government has also sold confiscated bitcoins before. For example, in March 2023, officials sold 9,861 BTC related to the Silk Road case for approximately US$216 million, an incident that was later confirmed in court documents.

Earlier this year, government wallets also transferred nearly $984,000 worth of confiscated FTX and Alameda assets, of which at least $768,000 reached Coinbase Prime. According to Arkham's analysis, the funds are intended to help repay FTX creditors.

As of now, no federal agency has announced any sale plans related to this latest transfer of 833.6 BTC. Confirming the sale requires more transaction data or official statements from the government and Coinbase.
