Netherlands: Counterfeit tokens involved in luxury watch fraud

Dutch authorities have arrested two suspects suspected of using counterfeit EURC tokens to purchase authentic Rolex watches. The investigation began when some luxury watch sellers mistakenly believed they had received legal cryptocurrency payments and delivered the goods.

Does the seller mistake fraud for real payment?

Yes. Officials reported that the suspect contacted sellers on Marktplaats, one of the main online markets in the Netherlands. The two parties allegedly agreed to use EURC as the payment method for luxury watches. At first, the crypto assets transferred by the buyer appeared to be real, but were later discovered to be counterfeit tokens.

The police emphasized that it is difficult to distinguish between these counterfeit cryptographic assets and the real EURC.

What is the difference between a real EURC and a counterfeit token?

The true EURC is recognized as a stablecoin that anchors the euro. In the cryptocurrency ecosystem, certain unauthorized tokens imitate the names and symbols of well-known assets. This brings additional risks to buyers and sellers when conducting direct wallet transactions.

Brief Glossary: EURC is a stablecoin designed to anchor its value to the euro. Stabilocins are designed to keep their prices stable relative to specific fiat currencies or other reference points.

Authorities have not disclosed how counterfeit tokens were created. However, the method used in this case is sufficient to believe that it copied legitimate blockchain assets.

Investigation into two detainees continues
