THORChain responded that it is a decentralized and permission-free network like Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB chain, and asked what responsibility it would assume if other networks faced the same situation. Bitget's public tracking list lists a total of 2,377 attacker addresses holding $378 million, of which 1,497 are marked as having transferred funds through THORChain.
Security researchers criticize ThorChain for double standards
ThorChain's response sparked criticism from security researcher Taylor Monahan. In a debate with crypto enthusiast Joel Valenzuela, Monahan refuted the view that "screening transactions is different than stopping the network."
Valenzuela once wrote that most networks, including Bitcoin, have experienced downtime and rollbacks, but screening transactions is another matter: "That's really censorship."
The researcher countered that the team had previously secretly redistributed assets, then claimed that it had failed to decentralize in seven years, had been hacked seven times, and that she said it was built by North Korean IT workers.
Ethereum advocate Marius Kjærstad tags the Grok chatbot and asks if Monahan's statement holds up. Grok said it was partially accurate, citing at least three attacks in 2021 worth about $416 million and a product with suspended lending (debt of about $200 million), but found no evidence to support North Korea's claims or that operators had withdrawn funds for profit.
Critics point out that the network shut down itself in May
