Strong Far weaker than expected Usually frontal Setting a record Expected Limited reaction Set a record Stronger expectations Stock prices may fall Strong quarterly performance Weak outlook guidance Usually negative

Outlook guidance is more important than quarterly earnings

Quarterly earnings describe the past, and outlook guidance tells investors what management expects for the future. That's why even if revenue and profit estimates exceed expectations, a company's share price can still fall after executives predict slower growth, lower margins, or increased expenses.

Since valuation models rely heavily on future cash flows, outlook guidance has become a dominant part of the financial report. Charles Schwab pointed out that in the past, even if the company exceeded consensus earnings expectations, disappointing outlook has caused stock prices to fall sharply.

TSMC provides the opposite example. Its second-quarter results exceeded expectations, and strong outlook guidance boosted confidence in future artificial intelligence demand.

Share price may be perfectly priced

Valuation is equally important. A stock that has risen 50% before the earnings report may require extraordinary results to justify its current price. If the company achieves record profits but does not significantly exceed investors 'expectations, traders may choose to take profits.

Samsung provides a good example: Despite its record dividends, the results still disappointed the market as investor expectations rose faster. This principle is often found in artificial intelligence stocks: the better the narrative, the higher the threshold for the next financial report.

Profit margins and cash flow can outpace revenue growth

Headline revenue is only part of the earnings report. Investors are also paying close attention to the following indicators:

  • Gross profit margin
  • Operating Profit Margin
  • Free cash flow
  • Capital Expenditure
  • Debt Level
  • Future Outlook Guidance

A company may achieve rapid revenue growth but spend even faster. If profit margins deteriorate or capital spending surges, investors may conclude that growth is becoming increasingly expensive.
