Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore) Limited announced on Thursday that it plans to provide custody services for some crypto-assets, stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets to eligible institutional customers and recognized investor corporate customers. The plan requires regulatory approval.

This move builds on Standard Chartered's business in markets such as the United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg and Hong Kong, and follows an agreement in May this year to merge Zodia Custody's core business into Standard Chartered.

Custody services will be parallel to securities business

Standard Chartered said Singapore's status as a financial and innovation center makes its market an important part of its global institutional investor strategy.

The service launched in Singapore will be parallel to Standard Chartered Bank's Financing and Securities Services Department, integrating traditional asset services, tokenization and digital custody under the same architecture. The bank said this allows it to serve customers throughout the life cycle of traditional and digital assets through a single interconnected platform.

Patrick Lee, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Singapore and ASEAN and South Asia, said that strong infrastructure is needed to support the safe flow and services of tokenized assets on an institutional scale. Ole Matthiessen, global head of transaction services and digital assets at Standard Chartered Bank, pointed out that secure and regulated custody is the foundation of the digital asset ecosystem, and the bank will continue to invest in various financial centers to improve relevant capabilities.

Expansion based on acquisitions of United Arab Emirates and Zodia Custody
