Solana achieves 200 milliseconds per slot: latency is reduced, but throughput remains unchanged

Since Friday afternoon, Solana has been working to shorten the time per block slot to 200 milliseconds. The reconstruction work that began in August with a target of 400 milliseconds is now complete, and the network is running twice as fast as it was during the summer. However, the market's response was flat: Solana was at $109.84 in early Saturday morning, down 0.8% from the previous trading day.

Reports on this reconstruction often overlook a more critical data for investors: not just 200 milliseconds, but the calculated budget for each block is also reduced by the same proportion. Overall, Solana is processing the same number of transactions per second as before. The only thing that changes is the wait time, which affects your capital primarily in terms of leverage and validator commissions.

Final step of SIMD-0525: Enable 200 ms slot from epoch 1053

This switch takes effect at the beginning of epoch 1053. Anza, the company behind the Agave validator client, confirmed on the X platform at 14:42 UTC on October 9:"SIMD-0525 mission successfully completed: 200ms slot is live on mainnet-beta." Jacob Creech of the Solana Foundation also tweeted on the same day: "That's it, our current Solana is running in a 200ms slot," adding: "Next up is Alpenglow."

Measured data in four stages: None of them met the target

What is worth sorting out is the data that few people have summarized before. The reduction was divided into four stages, and Solana Compass extracted average measurements from each stage from completed eras. No stage fully achieves its intended goals:

• 400 milliseconds target: The measured average is between 415 and 423 milliseconds, exceeding the target by 3.8% to 5.8%.
• 350 milliseconds target: The measured average is between 365 and 367 milliseconds, exceeding the target by 4.3% to 4.9%.
• 300 msec target: The measured average is between 315 and 317 milliseconds, exceeding the target by 5.0% to 5.7%.
• 250 msec target (previously valid): The measured average is between 266 and 269 milliseconds, exceeding the target by 6.4% to 7.6%. The measured value for the 1052nd era (the last one before the switch) was 268.5 milliseconds.

Therefore, the excess gradually expands with each stage, from less than 4% to about 7%. If this trend continues, Solana's actual average slot time may fall around 213 to 215 milliseconds rather than the exact 200 milliseconds. This is based on self-determination over four measurement stages, rather than Anza's target values or research institution predictions. The conclusions will be more solid only when the 1054th Era is completed and new measurement data are provided.

More cycles per second, but less load per time

Why five blocks per second does not mean more computing power

Each Solana block carries a fixed computing unit budget. The computing unit is the network's unit of measurement of transaction complexity: simple transfers require thousands of units, while nested exchanges in decentralized exchanges require several times that. Once the block budget is exhausted, the remaining transactions must move on to the next block.

This budget is proportional to the slot length. According to existing reports, at 250 milliseconds, the budget per block is 37.5 million computing units; at 200 milliseconds, it drops to 30 million. Although Solana Compass did not give absolute values, it described this coupling relationship and recorded that the current block's computing space is only half of the 400-millisecond period.

Convert it to every second, and the conclusion is clear: in the 250-millisecond mode, there are 4 blocks per second, with 37.5 million computing units per block, totaling 150 million computing units per second. In the 200-millisecond mode, there are 5 blocks per second, and each block is 30 million computing units, which still totals 150 million computing units per second. The total capacity of the network remains unchanged.

What changes is the waiting time. In the worst case scenario, transactions now wait up to 200 milliseconds to block, instead of the previous 250 milliseconds. The average wait time dropped from 125 milliseconds to 100 milliseconds. For ordinary users, this 25-millisecond improvement is negligible and almost invisible in exchange trading. The expectation that Solana can now carry more load and reduce transaction dropouts during peak periods is a misinterpretation of the effectiveness of this step, as it does not provide such gains.

Verifier votes five times per second: Cost considerations for small operators

Alpenglow is not only a reconstruction of rhythm, but also a reconstruction of consensus procedures. Its explicit goal is to achieve 150 milliseconds of finality, the point in time when transactions are irreversible. The migration of the test network was completed on September 24, and the migration of the development network was completed on September 25. With the implementation of SIMD-0525, there was a gap of several weeks between the completion of the test net and the main net.

So the order is clear: the rhythm adjustment has been completed, and finalization still needs to be achieved. For Solana's application scenarios against traditional payment systems, finality is even more important because merchants will only ship after payment is finally confirmed. This finalization will wait for Alpenglow to arrive, but there is no date yet.

Leveraged trading: Shorten the time lag between clearing and oracle updates

This is the first time that a change in pace has had a perceptible impact at the euro pricing level. Prices on the decentralized futures exchange on Solana come from prophecies written into blocks. As long as the new block contains the new price, the clearing order will take effect. Shortening slot times means shortening the entire sequence.

If you trade Solana with leverage, the window of time between the price hitting the clearing threshold and the position being forcibly closed will be shorter from now on. Taking the 3% intraday high and low volatility displayed on Saturday as an example, 20 times leverage is enough to close a position without making a margin call. The new pace does not increase this possibility, it just speeds up the pace.

Specific advice: Check the clearing price of each open position and compare it to the current price's distance and intra-day volatility. If the clearing price is within the range of the past 24 hours, the buffer space is too weak. The leverage ratios and margin rules applicable to different futures venues vary greatly. Please use the rules of your platform as the basis, rather than the market average.

German Pledges and Taxation: The € 256 tax exemption threshold remains a difficulty

The technical re-engineering has not changed the tax framework, but has attracted attention to a calculation issue that many pledgers ignore. According to the circular of the German Federal Ministry of Finance on cryptocurrency taxation, continuous pledge income is included in the "other income" as stipulated in Article 22, paragraph 3, of the Income Tax Law in the year in which it is received. There is a tax exemption of 256 euros per year.

Tax exemptions are not exemptions. As long as it exceeds 1 euro, the entire income will be taxed, not just the excess. With a single-digit percentage yield and a price of $109.84, a medium four-digit position is enough to break that threshold within a year. When the token itself is sold, the one-year holding period stipulated in Article 23 of the Income Tax Law still applies.

If revenue is not recorded in real time, it will be difficult to rebuild later because each payment is valued at the price on the day it arrived. Our assessment: Delayed delivery, unchanged capacity

From the newsroom perspective, the completion of SIMD-0525 is a cleanly executed engineering project, but its strength as an argument for price increases is weaker than the title suggests. This article provides three pieces of evidence to support this view: the 150 million computing units per second that remain constant, the measured excess per target has increased from less than 4% to more than 7%, and the flat response that prices fell by only 0.8% on the day of the switch.

On the other hand, latency is indeed a bottleneck for some types of applications. Securitize chose Solana among all chains to issue twelve tokenized U.S. stocks on October 8, and settled them in USDC. As CoinDesk reported: In securities trading, the time required for finalization is crucial. But the final implementation relies on Alpenglow, which has no date yet. To view Friday's steps as a driving force for price increases is to expect an effect that has not yet been achieved technically.

200 msec slot: Data from the 1054th era determines everything

The next solid data point is not an announcement, but a measurement. Once the 1054th Era is complete, the first average that matches the new goal will be available. If the result is approximately 213 to 215 milliseconds, the series of trends in the first four stages is confirmed. If it is much higher than this, it means that the last step spans too long.
