Citi launches Bitcoin escrow service, and the market is moving towards round-the-clock trading...

Why did Citi launch a cryptocurrency custody service?

Citi plans to launch a digital asset custody service in the second half of 2026, with the first batch of support for Bitcoin, allowing institutional customers to hold both traditional securities and cryptocurrencies through the same comprehensive custody framework. The Wall Street bank has previously revealed that it will launch a native cryptocurrency custody business this year, but the latest announcement provides a clearer structure for this expansion-the service will be included in the Custody+ platform, a new system developed by Citi Investor Services to adapt to the market trend of continuous trading and faster settlements. When the escrow service goes online, Bitcoin will become the first digital asset supported. Citi did not specify the specific launch date, nor did it disclose other cryptocurrency varieties that may be added in the future.

For institutional customers, the appeal of this service is not only that it provides an additional way to hold Bitcoin, but also that it can integrate and manage traditional assets with digital assets through a mature global custodian. Asset management companies and other financial institutions entering the cryptocurrency space often require custody arrangements that comply with existing compliance, reporting and operating systems, rather than relying on independent cryptocurrency native service providers. Citi said the service is built on its common digital asset architecture, allowing banks to connect cryptocurrency custody with other tokenization and settlement products under development.

How can Custody+ change Citi's existing business?

Custody+ is designed for markets that are increasingly breaking through traditional settlement times. The platform combines digital asset custody with real-time asset services, real-time settlement capabilities, liquidity tools and artificial intelligence-driven market intelligence. Citi has also incorporated tokenized deposit infrastructure into the platform. Currently, Citi has allowed tokenized deposits to be moved around the clock in near real time in selected markets, providing institutional customers with an alternative way to move regulated bank funds outside the regular payment window. If financial markets continue to move towards round-the-clock trading, it will become increasingly important to juxtapose these capabilities with custody services. If capital flows, collateral transfers and settlements remain limited to bank business hours, faster transactions will have little value. Citi is building the infrastructure that connects these functions: cryptocurrency custody processes digital assets, tokenized deposits provide bank-based settlement tools, and real-time services narrow the operational gap between transactions and post-transaction processing.

Investor Points

Citigroup launches Bitcoin escrow services as part of its larger institutional infrastructure strategy rather than a stand-alone cryptocurrency product. As traditional markets move closer to round-the-clock trading, the bank is combining custody, tokenized deposits and faster settlements.

To what extent has Citigroup expanded in tokenized finance?

Throughout 2026, Citi accelerated its work on digital assets. In January, the bank said it was working with the Intercontinental Exchange to support tokenized deposits entering the ICE clearing house to connect blockchain-based bank funds to institutional market infrastructure. In July, Citi joined the Swift pilot project, which involves using tokenized deposits to achieve round-the-clock cross-border payments. The project aims to explore whether banks can transfer tokenized commercial bank funds across borders without relying entirely on traditional payment schedules. Citi is also one of the major U.S. banks participating in the clearing house's plan to build a tokenized deposit network, which is targeted to start in the first half of 2027. Taken together, these moves demonstrate that Citi is focused on regulated forms of digital finance rather than building products around speculative token offerings. Bitcoin custody allows the bank to enter the mature cryptocurrency space, while tokenized deposits retain payment and settlement activities within the banking system. This combination may be particularly critical for institutions that want to take advantage of blockchain infrastructure but do not want to replace bank deposits with privately issued stablecoins.

Can banks seize more cryptocurrency custody shares from native service providers?

Citi's addition adds a large traditional custodian to a market that has historically relied heavily on professional digital asset companies. Large banks have advantages over institutions that already use their securities custody, cash management and settlement services. Providing digital assets within the same operating framework reduces the number of counterparties customers need to manage and makes it easier to integrate cryptocurrency holdings into existing risk management and reporting processes. However, native custodians of cryptocurrencies still offer specialized technology and broader token support, while large banks tend to expand cautiously, initially supporting only a limited range of assets. Citi's decision to start with Bitcoin reflects this thinking. So the test of competition will be whether Citi can expand quickly after its initial launch and whether customers view Custody+ as a comprehensive platform, rather than just another Bitcoin hosting option. If the institutional market continues to evolve towards tokenized securities and round-the-clock settlement, custody services alone cannot determine which service providers will gain market share. Banks that can connect assets, cash, collateral and settlements within a regulated system may have a stronger advantage, and Citi is building Custody+ around this model.
