Blockchain's Secure Message and Transport Layer
The Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) developed by Chainlink aims to allow applications to communicate between different blockchain networks. In short, it serves as a secure messaging and transport layer between otherwise isolated chains.
CCIP is a blockchain interoperability solution that securely transfers data and value between more than 60 public and private blockchains through a single integration. This breadth is crucial in a market where liquidity, users and applications are increasingly scattered across competitive ecosystems.
The protocol has three core functions. First, it allows smart contracts on one blockchain to send messages to smart contracts on another blockchain, allowing applications to trigger actions on different chains without requiring users to manually switch ecosystems. Second, it uses token pools and other mechanisms to support cross-chain token transfers and maintain controllable supplies across networks. Third, and also noteworthy, it allows developers to transfer tokens, any message, or both simultaneously in a single transaction, with built-in compliance and modular security features without having to build systems for each operation.
Developers can also attach instructions to the transfer operation, so that the receiving application automatically performs the corresponding operation when the token arrives. This programmability opens the door to cross-chain lending, payments, transactions and other DeFi application scenarios that would otherwise require extensive customized engineering development.
Oracle Infrastructure and Institutional Applications
CCIP is supported by Chainlink's decentralized oracle network, which eliminates single points of failure and provides defense-in-depth security for cross-chain operations.
The protocol has been ISO 27001 certified and has completed SOC2 Type 1 certification covering security, availability and confidentiality. In the first quarter of 2026, Deloitte completed a SOC2 Type 2 review of Chainlink CCIP and data feeds.
After security certification, organization-level applications followed. Coinbase selected CCIP as the exclusive bridging infrastructure for all of its Coinbase encapsulated assets, including cbBTC, cbETH, cbDOGE, cbLTC, cbADA and cbXRP, which have a total market value of approximately US$7 billion as of December 2025. Recently, the Wyoming stablecoin Council completed the migration of its Frontier stablecoin (FRNT) from LayerZero to CCIP.
Since its launch on the main network in July 2023, CCIP has evolved from a project on the roadmap to a fully operational protocol, currently connecting more than 60 blockchain networks and becoming a decentralized financial and institutional critical infrastructure for applications. As of July 2026, Chainlink's own data shows that the total value of its guarantees is US$43.3 billion, and the cumulative transaction value achieved reaches US$32.18 trillion.
The broader premise is simple: blockchain was originally built as independent networks, but users and capital increasingly need to flow between these networks. CCIP is Chainlink's attempt to provide the infrastructure for this mobility, and the progress of enterprise-level applications suggests that this demand will only grow.
