Ethereum co-founder wants to reduce quantum security privacy transaction costs by more than 99%.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said on Wednesday that he would like to see a proposal incorporated into future network upgrades that aims to reduce quantum security privacy transaction costs by more than 99%.
Optimize verification costs through EIP-8288
The EIP-8288 proposal co-drafted by Buterin in June this year aims to move the most onerous cryptographic calculations out of the network's execution path. Currently, the size of post-quantum signatures is about 2 to 3 kilobytes, and the Gas cost required for verification is between 150,000 and 200,000. The situation proved by STARK is even more serious. Its size exceeds 128 kilobytes, and if generated quickly, it can reach 512 kilobytes, resulting in millions of verification Gas costs.
Butrin pointed out in a tweet that a well-designed privacy transaction currently costs about 300,000 Gas, and to achieve quantum security, the cost is as high as about 10 million Gas. Under the EIP-8288 proposal, both costs will be reduced to a low level of tens of thousands of Gas.
Down-chain dependency declaration and recursive proof mechanism
The core of this solution is that cryptographic operations are not deployed directly on the chain at all. Instead, transactions declare only a "dependency"-a brief statement that a message is signed by a key, or that some data satisfies a certificate, a statement that takes only 96 bytes. The memory pool node then collects these declarations every second and generates a single recursive STARK proof that covers all declarations at once, and then passes it to the block. In the end, each block carries only one certificate covering everything in it.
RISC-V as a universal language for recursive proof
Recursive proof requires a universal language to express statements, and the current leading candidate is RISC-V, an open source instruction set for chip design. Adoption of the proposal would make RISC-V a de facto standard instruction set for Ethereum. Butrin called it a "major decision" that needed to be treated with caution, but believed it was a necessary move.
Back in July, Butrin proposed a similar idea in the draft Lean Ethereum roadmap. The roadmap plans to rebuild almost all major protocol components over the next three to four years and put recursive STARK at its core.
Other application scenarios: Private account abstraction
Buterin also outlines another application scenario: private account abstraction. That is to hide the logic of the account on the chain, and then change the ownership of all positions and holdings associated with the account in a single transaction without revealing specific details.
Implementation timetable and future outlook
EIP-8288, co-written by Butrin and Thomas Coratger, relies on Frames, a trading restructuring plan promoted on Sunday (which itself has not yet been scheduled). Butrin hopes to include both in the I-star upgrade, the next upgrade since Hegota and his last Ethereum upgrade before the start of the "Lean Era." Currently, neither of these two options is allocated to specific hard forks.
