Singapore S$4.9 million robbery verdict: Limitations of blockchain tracking and asset recovery dilemmas
Six Malaysian men are on trial in a robbery case worth S$4.9 million in Singapore, the verdict reveals a key issue in a cryptocurrency investigation. Although blockchain transactions are open and transparent, recovering stolen assets is far more difficult than imagined.
On September 14, the six men were sentenced for participating in a 2024 robbery at a luxury home in King Albert Park. At the time, a high-stakes poker game was being played in the residence. According to a report published by Wu Blockchain on the X platform, the gang stole cash and cryptocurrency by forcing victims to transfer cryptocurrency to wallets they controlled.
Some funds have been recovered, most of them are still missing
Singapore authorities have recovered approximately S$1.69 million in cryptocurrency. However, Channel NewsAsia and The Straits Times reported that approximately S$3.21 million in stolen assets are still missing. This case provides a powerful test case for assessing the actual effectiveness of blockchain transparency.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the six Malaysian men were found guilty and sentenced in the High Court of Singapore on September 14 for participating in an armed robbery in Bukit Timah in 2024.
Visible trading trajectory does not equal asset recoverability
In response to Wu Blockchain's post on the X platform, a lawyer named "oneweb3" commented that the investigators were able to recover S$1.69 million may be because the robbers made mistakes in transferring funds. The review also noted that the transfer of USDT through hardware wallets during the robbery left traces that investigators could trace.
Another commentator, Buffichai, emphasized the opposite. His post argued that the recovery showed how blockchain transparency could benefit victims, because even if the funds left the original wallet, transaction records remained clearly visible.
Interestingly, the focus is not just on "cryptocurrency crimes," but that once cash is converted into on-chain assets, investigators can still trace and recover them. The recovered amount of approximately S$1.69 million shows that transparency is a double-edged sword.
These two views are not contradictory. The public blockchain permanently records transfer information, allowing investigators to reconstruct the flow of assets between addresses. However, the wallet address does not automatically reveal the identity of its controller. Investigators will still need to associate the address with an individual, exchange account, device, service provider or other identifiable point.
This difference is also reflected in Singapore's ScamShield guidelines, which warn that cryptocurrency transfers are often irreversible and difficult to recover.
Easy to track, difficult to recover

现有的法庭报道并未提供未被追回资产的逐钱包详细清单。因此,断言区块链分析失败或剩余资金已成功隐藏在链上是为时过早的。
对加密货币用户的更大启示
这起劫案表明,当可追溯性与身份、托管、司法管辖区和执行脱节时,其局限性便显现出来。
对于用户而言,实际的教训是:自我托管可以抵御某些机构风险,但将更多责任置于个人身上。可见的区块链记录无法撤销未经授权的转账,无法恢复受损的凭证,也不能保证拥有可追回资产的 identifiable person 依然存在。
对于调查人员来说,此案增加了对快速报告、专业区块链分析、交易所合作以及跨国法律协调的需求。技术可以保留踪迹,但追回资金仍然取决于链外发生的事情。
