Arc Studio

The rise of autonomous software payments

The release of Arc Studio comes as Circle explores payment use cases initiated by autonomous software. In August, Circle released data showing that 99.3% of the payment transaction volume measured through the x402 agent payment protocol in the second quarter was settled in USDC. Although this data only covers protocol activity measured by Circle and does not represent the share paid by all AI agents, it is sufficient to prove USDC's dominance in the machine economy. In addition, Circle's Agent Stack launched in May already included more than 900 paid services at the end of the second quarter.

Comprehensive expansion of Arc Ecosystem

The release of Arc Studio is accompanied by a larger expansion of the Arc Ecosystem after its launch on the public main network on September 16. Previous reports pointed out that the launch of Arc's main network marks the official launch of Circle's Layer 1 network, which uses USDC as the transaction fee currency, achieves deterministic settlement in less than one second, and supports Ethereum virtual machine applications.

Arc launched with Circle and 11 founding verifiers from well-known institutions, including BlackRock, DTCC, Galaxy, ICE, Mastercard, MoneyGram, SBI Group, Standard Chartered Bank, Sumitomo Corporation, Visa and Worldpay, a subsidiary of Global Payments. According to Circle, more than 100 applications and more than 100 institutions and ecosystem builders were running on the network when the main network was launched. Arc initially integrated partners in multiple fields such as banks, asset management companies, payment companies, exchanges, custodians, wallets, DeFi protocols and AI platforms.

The network supports 22 types of fiat currencies and launched tokenized funds such as BUIDL, USYC, JAAA and JTRSY at its launch. With CCTP and Circle Gateway, Arc provides a path to move supporting assets and gain liquidity between more than 20 blockchain networks.

Arc is built in an EVM-compatible environment and allows developers to use Solidity and existing Ethereum development tools. USDC, as a native asset to Gas Metrics, eliminates the need to hold separate network tokens to pay for ordinary transaction fees. Before the mainnet was launched, Arc operated as a private mainnet with more than 100 institutions and ecological participants; its early public test net had processed more than 700 million transactions before the mainnet was opened.

Continuing to deepen developer and agent tools

Arc Studio is just one of a series of products Circle has built around Arc to serve developers, institutions and autonomous agents. Other supporting products include:

  • Arc App Kits: provides packaged common financial function components such as payment, exchange, fiat deposit and income aggregation.
  • Arc Portal: Provides users with an interface for injecting funds into agent wallets, setting expenditure limits, and delegating specific on-chain tasks.
  • Circle Agent Stack: provides policy-controlled wallet and micro-payment capabilities;Agent Wallets are designed specifically for software that allows it to hold, trade and bridge USDC within human-set spending rules.

In terms of institutional capabilities, Circle earlier this year disclosed plans for confidential smart contract capabilities, in which Arc Privacy is designed to protect the privacy of selected financial information while retaining access needed for audits and compliance reviews. Circle believes confidential contracts have potential uses in areas such as payroll, treasury management, tokenized assets, trading and lending.

Studio is currently accessible through its Web interface and can be used as a sub-agent by developers working in existing coding environments. The resulting application remains exportable, allowing the team to review the code and move it to its own warehouse and use its own keys and infrastructure for final deployment.
