The investigation was launched in July by the Katrini Criminal Investigation Bureau after receiving two anonymous complaints submitted through the digital government service platform gov.gr. According to law enforcement officials, in the northern Greek city of Katrini alone, the cryptocurrency pyramid scam has at least 1,842 members, with 2 million euros invested in it before it was discovered.
Greek soldiers face questioning over their alleged role in the scam
Investors have spoken to seven arrested people, including soldiers of various ranks. ERT TV revealed that the six had been released on bail with bail ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 euros.
The Newsbomb.gr website quoted public broadcaster sources as saying that a 44-year-old man living in Katrini is in custody pending trial and is believed to be one of the key figures in the criminal group. He serves as team leader in the capital of the administrative unit of the Piria region, which hosts the project's largest branch, the "Association of Friends of Artificial Intelligence." The organization promises to make huge profits through artificial intelligence-driven cryptocurrency transactions.
Greek media explained before the weekend that investors would initially have access to their account balances within the first 50 days of making a deposit. However, on September 1, withdrawals were suddenly suspended on the grounds that the platform was changing its investment strategy.
The nine high-ranking gang members questioned Monday included a soldier from Pyria and another from Larissa, the largest city in Thessaly, who was accused of being behind the crime. The investigation found that the two men had traveled abroad together to obtain expertise needed to set up cryptocurrency schemes from an as-yet-unidentified third person. [TAG
Greek judicial authorities are currently investigating how the funds were collected, where they went, and the role of various participants in the now-defunct cryptocurrency fraud ring. Some of the proceeds are known to be transferred through digital banks overseas or converted into cryptocurrency and deposited in digital wallets controlled by fraudsters.
The vast majority of criminals were arrested during special operations on September 30. Police conducted searches of offices and residences in several Greek cities. Police seized more than 295,000 euros in cash, bank cards, dozens of mobile phones, computers and storage drives, as well as a large number of documents, notes and other physical evidence.
