ETH The Crypto Innovation Council supports OCC's approval of crypto company licenses, saying litigation aims to curb innovation
The Crypto Innovation Council (CCI) expressed support for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)'s move to approve licenses for multiple crypto companies, and pointed out that the lawsuit filed by the Independent Community Bankers Association of America (ICBA) is an attempt to stifle innovation.
On Monday, CCI CEO Ji Hun Kim said the ICBA lawsuit was a "clear attempt to resist competition in the fields of national trust licensing, payment innovation, and financial services." Although some lawmakers accused exchanges of "wanting to evade the basic safeguards and obligations that come with being a bank," the crypto advocacy group firmly supports the OCC's national trust license and conditional approval of crypto companies.
ICBA filed a lawsuit on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colombia, accusing the OCC of approving U.S. banking licenses to entities, including crypto companies, without providing adequate safeguards or complying with requirements that normally apply to banks.
ICBA President and CEO Rebecca Romero Rainey said in a statement issued on Friday: "Congress did not create the National Trust Licence to allow crypto companies seeking the credibility of federal banking licenses to bypass Community Reinvestment Act obligations, merger regulation, capital and liquidity standards, and FDIC insurance for insured deposit-taking institutions, thereby using the banking system as its 'side door' entry."
