Jack Dorsey's Block applies for a banking license to provide Bitcoin custody services.
Block, a payment company led by Jack Dorsey, has formally submitted a banking license application with the express purpose of providing Bitcoin custody services. The move marks a move towards holding the asset under a regulated structure.
Focus on a single function: safe custody
Although the scope is limited, the goal is clear. Block is not seeking to fully expand into general banking, but to focus on Bitcoin custody. This focus locks the core of the application on a single function: "safe custody." Previously, Block has expanded its bitcoin payment options, and this trusteeship core license application extends its commitment from simply "transferring bitcoin" to "holding bitcoin", further consolidating its layout in the encryption field.
What is Bitcoin escrow?
Simply put, custody business refers to securely holding assets on behalf of customers and controlling the keys that protect those assets. For Bitcoin, this means guarding the private key that has access to the token. It is worth noting that the stated purpose of this application is only for custody and does not involve other activities such as loans, deposits, transactions or insurance. There are currently no reports that Block intends to provide other financial services mentioned above.
Unconfirmed details
It should be emphasized that submitting an application is not the same as obtaining approval. Current reports only describe what Block is seeking, not the decisions it has obtained, and there is currently no actual hosting service available for reference. In addition, several basic details remain unresolved: the specific regulatory body, the type of license, the exact legal entity and the timetable for any decision. Before verifying these facts, it is not advisable to draw conclusions about the scope of the business or the results.
Previous reports that Block was committed to providing Bitcoin and stablecoin custody services through the National Trust Bank path highlighted that the company has been deploying around a regulated custody model rather than suddenly entering the field. Although the broader Bitcoin market closely follows institutional entry channels, the exact location of this latest application in this spectrum has not yet been confirmed.
Therefore, the key issue lies in the attitude of regulators. If Block succeeds in obtaining the license it wants, will the payment company become one of the more credible options for institutions that want to hold Bitcoin within its banking system?
