Former Acting Chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission Uyeda: The case of abandonment of crypto companies paves the way for a "180-degree turn" in policy

Before Paul Atkins was officially confirmed as chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mark Uyeda, who served as acting chairman of the agency, said that the SEC dropped civil cases against cryptocurrency companies because regulators were preparing for a "180-degree turn" in rulemaking.

Speaking at a Financial Market Quality Conference hosted by the Psaros Center for Finance and Markets Policy on Wednesday, Uyeda said the SEC dropped cases involving crypto companies in early 2025 because continuing with these lawsuits could undermine the agency's credibility in court if it contradicts its planned policy changes. Uyeda pointed out that there had been "serious concerns" that cases against crypto companies were "legally tenable."

The commissioner said: "I will not let our lawyers stand up in court even if they have cases authorized by the previous government, and then the committee issues an interpretation that is diametrically opposed to what they have previously argued in court." He stressed,"I think it undermines [our] credibility as an institution."
