BTC Co-founder of Avalanche: Cryptography pioneer before Bitcoin
Before the birth of the Avalanche project, its co-founders began to rethink the way digital currencies work. Emin Gün Sirer (Twitter account@el33th4xor) designed a Proof-of-Work (PoW) currency called Karma in 2003 at Cornell University with two students Vivek Vishnumurthy and Sangeeth Chandrakumar. The paper was published at the Symposium on Peer-to-Peer System Economics, about six years before the advent of Bitcoin.
Karma: A monetary system designed to solve the free-riding problem
Karma was not conceived as a universal currency. It is described as the first peer-to-peer currency to use a decentralized coinage mechanism of proof-of-work consensus, aiming to solve the "free riding" problem in peer-to-peer networks by creating a decentralized economic framework in which participants cannot counterfeit currency.
In short, Karma tracks each user's contribution to consumption ratio in the file-sharing network and mints corresponding coins based on proof of work. Although Karma is widely cited and well-known in academia, Syrah acknowledges the project's limited impact. He did not pursue the project outside academia and was therefore not widely adopted.
