SOL Alpenglow has been launched on the test network
Solana's largest major upgrade to the consensus mechanism to date has officially entered the public test network stage. According to @anza_xyz, the Alpenglow upgrade was activated on the Solana test website at approximately 17:30 UTC on Thursday. After the new system took over TowerBFT, the transition process lasted approximately 17 minutes.
This upgrade aims to significantly reduce the time it takes for a transaction to become irreversible from approximately 13 seconds to just 0.15 seconds. The Anza team's goal is to control the final certainty (Median Finality) to between 100 and 150 milliseconds. Previous simulations under favorable conditions have shown that the value is about 100 milliseconds.
Currently, Solana uses the TowerBFT mechanism, with a final certainty time of 12.8 seconds, which is the time required for a transaction to be permanently confirmed on the network. Under this system, the verifier needs to record votes on the chain and accumulate enough confirmation votes in 32 consecutive slots before the block can reach the final certainty state.
How Alpenglow works and future plans
Alpenglow uses Votor to replace TowerBFT, allowing verifiers to determine blocks after one or two rounds of direct voting without changing the way users send funds. The upgrade changes the consensus process underlying Solana, but application developers and ordinary users can benefit without having to adopt a different trading system.

Alpenglow 已在专门为测试共识机制而创建的小型社区集群上运行了四个多月。因此，周四的测试网激活标志着该升级首次在更贴近大规模真实网络环境的基础设施上运行。Anza 于今年 5 月首次将 Alpenglow 引入社区验证者测试，当时将此项目描述为 Solana 历史上最大规模的共识变革。
