Market participants may immediately start selling the token at a price lower than native ETH because they are no longer confident that each token can be redeemed on a 1:1 ratio. This is similar to the case of depeg for stablecoins, except that the missing collateral lies within cross-chain infrastructure rather than in stablecoins 'reserves.
Hackers can also create tokens out of thin air
The bridging protocol does not necessarily require a direct loss of its locked reserves. Some attacks specifically utilize casting mechanisms. If an attacker can convince contracts on the target chain that the assets have been deposited (even though they have not actually been deposited), the bridging protocol may mince unsupported wrapping tokens . Chainlink describes such issues as "infinite mint" vulnerabilities: the supply of tokens increases, but reserves do not increase accordingly.
Attackers could then sell the tokens on a decentralized exchange or use them as collateral elsewhere. This makes the bridging vulnerability particularly dangerous because the damage it causes can spread to users who are not directly using the bridging service.
DeFi protocol may be next victim
Bridge assets are often deposited in lending agreements, liquidity pools, and decentralized exchanges. Suppose an unsupported wrapped token is accepted as collateral for a $1 million loan. If the price of the token suddenly collapses to near zero, the agreement will leave worthless collateral and the borrower will retain the lent assets.
This provides a path for the bridging vulnerability to spread to a DeFi system crash. This is one reason to understand the importance of DeFi's clearing mechanism: When the market loses confidence in an asset, the agreement may freeze the market, reduce the value of collateral, or quickly force liquidation.
Can bridge tokens be restored?
Sometimes. Bridging operators may replace stolen collateral, suspend casting functions, recover funds, or re-capitalize the system. If full mortgage support is restored, the wrapped tokens may gradually return to their original price anchors.
Some other bridging protocols use the Reserve Proof System (Proof-of-Reserve) to monitor whether outstanding packaging tokens are fully collateralized. These systems can be connected to circuit breakers that stop new mints or freeze affected trading markets when reserves fall below required levels.
