One of Wall Street's oldest banks raises price target: A stock is expected to rise 53%
One of Wall Street's oldest banks has signaled investors that a stock currently trading at $156.76 is expected to climb to $240, a gain of as much as 53%. The forecast comes from Citigroup, whose lineages date back to the City Bank of New York, which was chartered in 1812. Like most large banks, Citi has a team of research analysts whose job is to study listed companies and issue "target prices"-that is, estimate the reasonable value of the stock one year later, and give a buy, hold or sell rating recommendation.
In a previous report on Michael Saylor's Bitcoin strategy, Citi analyst Peter Christiansen just raised his target price from $136 to $240 and maintained a "Buy" rating. The stock, known as Strategy (formerly known as MicroStrategy), is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MSTR. The timing is no coincidence: Just a few days ago, the same bank raised its 12-month price forecast for Bitcoin and Ethereum, two major cryptocurrencies, by more than 35%. Obviously, Strategy's share price trend is highly correlated with Bitcoin, and its volatility far exceeds that of other stocks on the market.
What exactly is Strategy?
Strategy was founded in 1989 as a business software company co-founded by billionaire Michael Siler. In 2020, during the epidemic, the company transformed completely and reshaped its business model around a core concept: raising money by issuing additional new shares to investors, using the proceeds to buy bitcoins, holding those bitcoins, and then repeating the process.
The company currently holds more bitcoins than any other company on earth, setting a record of 847,666, including 1,665 new purchases last week.
Why would someone choose to buy shares in the company instead of buying Bitcoin directly? The main reason is convenience. MSTR trades like ordinary stocks, which means investors do not have to actually hold Bitcoin to gain price exposure to Bitcoin.
Key indicator of Strategy's health
Since Strategy is essentially a "package" wrapped in Bitcoin, Wall Street's criteria for evaluating the company are very clear: Is the company's market value higher or lower than the value of its Bitcoin holdings?
The indicator that answers this question is called mNAV (Market Net Asset Value). We can think of it as a gift basket: if the fruit inside is worth $100 and the entire basket sells for $120, then you pay a premium of $20 for the packaging; if the basket only sells for $90, it means that the packaging not only does not add value, but devalue, and it will be more cost-effective to buy fruit directly at this time.
An mNAV greater than 1 means that investors are willing to pay a premium, that is, the valuation they assign to Strategy is higher than the value of the coins they hold; an mNAV less than 1 means that the market believes that this "packaging" will dilute the value and that purchasing Bitcoin directly can gain a higher value for money.
Strategy's mNAV was below 1 for most of the year, reflecting the market's distrust of Bitcoin's downturn. With Bitcoin's recent recovery, mNAV has rebounded above 1 and is currently stable at 1.20.
How did Citigroup arrive at a target price of $240?
Christiansen's mathematical model is based on two independent assumptions:
Assumption 1: The price of Bitcoin itself rises. Citigroup's new forecast shows that Bitcoin prices will reach US$113,000 a year later. If realized, Strategy's 847,666 bitcoins would increase significantly, which analysts believe contributes approximately 34% of the potential share price increase.
Assumption 2: Premium expands. Christiansen expects investors to pay a higher premium for this "packaging"-his model raises the mNAV assumption from 1.065 to 1.24-which partly explains the remaining 16% potential gain.
