MetaMask disclosed security incidents and exited the Ethereum verification node as a precautionary measure.
On October 1, 2026, MetaMask released an update on its official website, reporting a security incident that affected some of its infrastructure. The company previously disclosed the issue for the first time the day before and said it "found no direct threat to MetaMask Wallet." In its latest announcement, MetaMask emphasized that based on current investigations, there is no indication that MetaMask wallets or client funds have been affected, but the review is continuing.
Take precautionary measures to coordinate with Lido Finance
Out of caution, MetaMask is proactively withdrawing from affected verification nodes in its unmanaged pledge business. This action was carried out after coordination with customers and partners. The company specifically pointed out that it does not manage withdrawal keys on behalf of customers, a structural design that means that even if the affected infrastructure is further compromised, there is limited damage that attackers can cause.
Liquidity pledge agreement Lido Finance also confirmed that MetaMask Staking has begun to withdraw the Ethereum verification node from the Lido agreement as a precautionary measure related to this security incident. This confirms that the verify node exit operation described in the MetaMask update has actually been performed on the chain, rather than just at the declarative level.
User Safety Tips
MetaMask has not disclosed details such as which specific infrastructure was affected or whether data was accessed, and said it is working with external partners and security consultants to conduct an ongoing investigation. In public guidance, MetaMask reminds users to be wary of unsolicited messages that mention the event, do not share the Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone, and only obtain further updates through official MetaMask channels. Given that security incidents at large wallet providers often trigger a wave of phishing attacks against anxious users, this is a standard precaution.
As one of the most widely used self-managed wallets in the Ethereum ecosystem, any infrastructure event in MetaMask that involves its pledge business is of great concern because the verification nodes associated with its services handle large amounts of value flows. The unmanaged structure of the MetaMask pledge product-in which the company never holds a user's withdrawal key-is the specific design basis for the company to assert that user funds remain safe even when underlying infrastructure incidents are still under investigation.
