In-depth analysis of Bitcoin RSI indicator: truths revealed by data and misunderstandings

On October 11, 2026, Bitcoin's Relative Strength Index (RSI) was 54.3 points, and the closing price of the day was US$83,675.60. The reading is in the middle, which is the perfect time to explain the indicator in depth: at this level, the RSI provides almost no useful information. Many traders use the RSI as a signal generator, often waiting for it to hit an extreme value-that is, above 70 or below 30 before taking action. So, how often do these extreme situations occur? What was the actual price trend then? We conducted independent calculations based on 705 daily closing price data.

Core Discovery: Overbought is not a sell signal

The conclusion was first announced because it contradicted traditional perception: in less than two years from November 6, 2024 to October 11, 2026, the number of days when Bitcoin's RSI was above 70 (the so-called "overbought" area) was only 50 days. On the 14th trading day after these 50 trading days, there were 32 days where prices were higher than the price on the day the signal was issued, accounting for 64%. It can be seen that "overbought" is not a sell signal during this period, but a relatively good state.

Analysis of current RSI data

On the last full trading day of our statistical series-October 11, 2026, Bitcoin closed at US$83,675.60. The 14th RSI for that day was 54.3 points, the previous day was 51.5 points, and on October 8 it was 46.9 points. Previously, the price briefly hit a high of $86,510.40 on October 4, when the RSI was 68.6; then fell back to $81,683.80 on October 8. At present, the indicator has rebounded from the lower half to the middle position.

Nature and Limitations of RSI

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum indicator: it compares the average price increase with the average price decline over a given period and places the result on a scale of 0 to 100. This indicator is developed by American engineer J. Welles Wilder proposed it in 1978 in his book "Concepts of a New Trading System"; the default 14-issue setting also comes from the same source and is still widely used today.

It is worth noting that RSI cannot measure what is equally important: it does not understand news events, trading volumes or valuations. Calculations are based only on past closing prices. Therefore, a high reading only means that there have been significantly more days of ups than downs in the past two weeks. The label "overbought" carries the color of human judgment, while the value itself is neutral.

Detailed explanation of the RSI calculation formula

The calculation process is divided into three steps:

  1. Determine the change: Calculate the difference between the daily price and the previous day and classify it as a gain or loss.
  2. Smoothing processing: The 14 days were averaged. The new average is obtained by multiplying the old average by 13/14 and adding 1/14 of the current value. This smoothing prevents a single outlier from causing sharp fluctuations in readings.
  3. Build an index: The final index value is determined by the ratio of two averages: 100 minus (100 divided by (1 plus the ratio)).

Taking October 11, 2026 as an example, the average daily income after smoothing is US$512.00, and the average daily loss is US$430.36. The ratio is 1.1897, resulting in an RSI of 54.33, which is rounded to 54.3. You can verify with a calculator: 100 divided by 2.1897 equals 45.67, and 100 minus 45.67 equals 54.33.

Why does the RSI rarely touch extreme values?

The same calculation reveals why RSI rarely touches the edge. To reach a reading of 70, the average gain must be 2.33 times the average loss; to reach a reading of 30, the average gain is only 0.43 times the average loss. Both scenarios require a clearly one-sided move in trading within two weeks, which is rare in the market.

Statistics show that among all 705 trading days, 50 days (7.1%) had the RSI above 70, and 26 days (3.7%) had the RSI below 30. For the remaining 615 days (approximately 87% of the time), the indicator was in the neutral zone between the two thresholds and provided no signal by textbook standards. The extreme values of this series are 15.4 and 85.9 points, corresponding to a price range of US$58,531.90 to US$124,766.50.

The origin and actual performance of overbought and oversold thresholds

The performance on the other side was even more disappointing. Of the 26 days when the RSI was below 30, only 12 days when prices were higher (46.2%) after 14 days, with an average change of-0.2%. This suggests that panic buying is not always right, and there are slightly more mistakes than right.

Note: These data need to be interpreted with caution. The sample size is small (50 and 26 cases), the time windows overlap, and only one cryptocurrency is involved and the time period is less than two years. The measurement results did not negate the RSI, but only showed that during this period, no decision could be made based on these two thresholds alone.

Deviation phenomenon: The gap between textbook patterns and reality

Experienced practitioners often do not read RSI by thresholds, but focus on divergence. There is a divergence when prices and indicators point in different directions. For example, prices hit new highs, but the RSI matching the high is lower than its previous peak, which is seen as a signal of weakening momentum.

The weakness of this model lies in its lag: only when prices fall can it be confirmed whether a high has actually formed. On a real-time chart, after three K-lines, the divergence may look completely different. This problem exists with any signal that relies on drawing lines after the fact.

Impact of time frames

The same indicator produces different values in different time frames because they deal with different closing prices. All data in this article are based on daily charts. On the hourly chart, the RSI fluctuates wider and touches edges more frequently; on the weekly chart, it almost never touches edges. This is the most common reason why two investors argue about the same currency and both provide indicator readings.

Simple rule in practice: RSI values without time frames and cycle lengths are not valid information. If a post claims "RSI is 28" but does not specify whether it is based on daily or hourly lines, the statement cannot be verified.

Limitations and self-verification of the RSI

The RSI uses a number to describe the past. It does not contain information about future supply and demand, capital inflows, regulatory deadlines or broader market conditions. In portfolios where positions are highly correlated, a second indicator built based on the same price adds less value.

In addition, there is a fundamental problem with any backtracking signal: each rule can fit past data until it looks perfect. Our counting was deliberately kept straightforward, using fixed cycle lengths, thresholds, and a fixed field of view of 14 days to ensure there were no post facto fits. Long-term models (such as halving block rewards once every four years) can refer to relevant charts.

How to check Bitcoin RSI by yourself

No paid software is required. Just get the daily closing prices and spreadsheets published by large exchanges. Create a column to calculate the difference from the previous day's change, divide the gains and losses into two columns, form a simple average for the first 14 rows, and then move forward with a 13:1 weight. The last column compares the two averages and applies the formula.

The value of this effort goes beyond the RSI itself: once you calculate the indicators yourself, you no longer blindly trust any chart. The price data for this series comes from the daily closing price of Bitcoin against the US dollar on the Kraken Exchange, from November 6, 2024 to October 11, 2026.

Summary and Recommendations

The RSI is in the middle, which is its most common state: 87% of the time on the days reviewed are between two thresholds. Extreme values occur rarely and do not point in a specific direction as their name suggests. As a description of the past two weeks, the RSI is useful; but it is not persuasive alone as a basis for deciding on the next purchase.

  • Always note the time frame and period: Record the K-line base and period length on which each RSI reading is based, otherwise it is not comparable.
  • Determine your own field of view before using the signal: Determine in advance the period during which the signal will be applied and test its performance on historical data.
  • Include transaction costs in the calculation: Frequently-triggered signals will generate handling fees, which exceed the average 0.2% change if the cost per round trip is 0.2%.
