Nikita Bier said on Tuesday that X would add buy and sell buttons for cryptocurrencies to the post, saying it was an extension of the Cashtags (price chart feature) he had previously created.
He made a similar commitment in January this year, and Cashtags did not include in-app transaction execution when it was launched in April. Bier resigned as head of X products on August 5 and currently retains the title only as a consultant.
On Tuesday, Nikita Bier said that X will directly add buy and sell buttons for cryptocurrency to the post. This is at least the third time since January that X has made a similar commitment in some form, and previous versions have not been converted into a practical trading button.
Bier made the above statement in response to a trader. The trader accused him of suppressing the visibility of Crypto Twitter through algorithmic adjustments. "The bull market can start because Nikita no longer blocks CT," wrote the trader, known as patchxbt.
Bier responded: "What are you talking about? I built Cashtags so that people can add Solana and Ethereum price charts directly to posts-and the trade button is coming soon. You can even directly paste the contract address of the newly issued token. Previously, there were no features for cryptocurrency traders on X..."
January forecast, launch in April
The trade button itself is not new news. Bier first announced the in-app cryptocurrency trading feature on January 11, a day after a cryptocurrency account accused him of hiding his posts. He said a version could be released "as early as February."
February has passed. What actually went online on April 14 is Cashtags-X's cryptocurrency and stock trading features, which are available to iPhone users in the United States and Canada. This feature displays real-time price charts and allows users to search for or paste token contract addresses, but does not open up any trading features.
Three days after the feature was launched, Bier himself admitted: "X will not execute transactions or act as a broker, but plans to build financial data tools and links." Canadian users get a button to open external broker Wealthsimple, rather than a trade executed on X. Bier said Cashtags "drove" about $1 billion in transaction volume in the first few days, a figure that describes activity on other platforms rather than orders completed on X.
He is no longer responsible for the team building the feature
The bigger change since January is not the product itself, but Bier's position. He resigned on August 5 after 13 months as product leader, saying "it's time to hand in the baton and get back to his job: a poster person." He stayed on as a consultant. In other words, Tuesday's promise came from someone who is no longer in charge of the functional team.
Bier's response also attributed the rise in cryptocurrencies to the U.S. Treasury Department, not X. This statement is not entirely accurate. The Ministry of Finance did announce in mid-August that it would roughly double the size of bond repurchase operations starting September 9, reaching at least $4 billion per operation. This is a regular bond market liquidity operation, not the scale of "dollar depreciation" implied in his post.
Neither Bier nor X announced a specific release date on Tuesday. Whether the trade button can be launched this time and whose product roadmap it will follow are questions that have remained unanswered in the past seven months.
