XRP ETF is a relatively new category that was launched only recently after the regulatory status of XRP under the XRP Ledger agreement became clear. As a result, its capital flows are more volatile than more mature Bitcoin and Ethereum products. Large redemptions by a single large institutional investor are enough to have a more drastic and significant impact on the total daily outflows of such funds than mature fund portfolios.
Whether this week's net outflow marks the beginning of a long-term rotation against Ethereum and XRP, or whether it is simply a one-day timing deviation related to Bitcoin's rebound driven by expectations of interest rate hikes remains to be clarified by data from the next week. Analysts tracking the flow of these funds typically need to watch at least three to five consecutive trading days moving in the same direction to view the change as a real trend rather than noise. This week's data alone has not yet met this criterion.
Differences in investor bases lead to differences in sensitivities
This model also reflects a broader dynamic that has existed since the launch of the mid-spot Ethereum ETF in 2024: The Bitcoin ETF category has always attracted a larger and more diverse institutional investor base, including pension funds and other investment vehicles that have explored exposure to crypto assets for the first time; Demand for Ethereum ETF is more concentrated in the hands of crypto-native funds and home offices that are already comfortable with the asset.
