BTC Can Bitcoin's lasting legacy survive in a rapidly evolving world of technology?
As Bitcoin celebrates its 17th birthday, discussions about whether its long history is an advantage or disadvantage are once again in the spotlight. Venture capitalist Jason Calacanis compares Bitcoin to outdated technologies, such as CDs from the Spotify era and DVDs from the Netflix era, to make his point that Bitcoin is no longer at the forefront of payment systems, smart contracts and application development.
Value store vs. function race
Karakanis believes that Bitcoin enthusiasts view the longevity and simplicity of their network as advantages. However, he pointed out that modern blockchain offers a wider range of technical capabilities, making Bitcoin lag behind in these areas. This view presupposes that blockchain is evaluated mainly based on its technical attributes.
In contrast, Strategy Board Chairman Michael Saylor disagreed, highlighting Bitcoin's market value of approximately $1.6 trillion. Thaler describes Bitcoin as "digital capital" that focuses on wealth preservation rather than competing with new blockchain functions. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) is known for holding large amounts of Bitcoin assets on its balance sheet.
Michael Siler emphasized that Bitcoin's main role is not to compete with the new blockchain, but as a digital capital tool focused on wealth preservation.
Is slow change a fundamental advantage?
