Ethereum researchers call on the crypto industry to prepare for potential threats from AI to ECDSA security

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake called on the cryptocurrency community to be psychologically prepared for the threat the rapid development of artificial intelligence may pose to the security of major blockchain networks, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Concerns about AI and cryptography

Drake, who is well known for his contributions to Ethereum research and development, advocates a strategy known as the "bunker mode" for digital asset holders. He encourages veteran investors and institutions to plan for the organized migration of funds into wallets protected by public keys that have never been used on the chain.

He explained that the proposal is intended to mitigate the hypothetical risk that unforeseen breakthroughs in mathematics or artificial intelligence could occur that expose private keys derived from public keys, endangering asset holdings across blockchains. Drake made it clear that he was not recommending users to act in panic, but rather recommended using existing encryption tools in the ecosystem to calmly and proactively update wallet addresses.

As Drake wrote: "Today I call on the blockchain industry to start calmly planning 'bunker models'-a precautionary measure rather than a response to any existing threats."

Debate on ECDSA vulnerabilities

Drake's main technical focus focuses on the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which is widely used to secure cryptocurrency transactions. He raised the possibility that even if quantum computing has not yet reached the critical threshold commonly known as "Q-day", classical computers, assisted by artificial intelligence, could undermine the security of ECDSA in the future.

If such a breakthrough occurs, Drake warns that using existing hardware, it may take as little as a week to extract the private key from the visible public key. This puts user funds at immediate risk.

Currently, there are no public studies that suggest the possibility of such attacks against the elliptic curve types chosen for Bitcoin, Ethereum and other major cryptocurrencies. Drake emphasized that his call was to prepare for scenarios with low probability of occurrence but huge impact, rather than to respond to existing loopholes.

Mini Dictionary: ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) is a cryptographic system used by many blockchains to verify digital signatures, ensuring that only the owner of the private key can authorize transactions. The security of ECDSA is the foundation of the security of most cryptocurrencies.

AI's growing mathematical capabilities

Drake highlighted recent progress in artificial intelligence, especially in mathematical reasoning, as a reason for renewed vigilance. He pointed to some examples of widely accepted mathematical boundaries and conjectures being overcome in unexpected ways, arguing that advanced artificial intelligence could speed up the discovery process and even design new algorithms that human experts might not have noticed.

Drake cited the efforts of organizations such as OpenAI, pointing out that the emergence of "mathematical superintelligence" has become a real prospect and claimed that it could overturn cryptographic assumptions that were once considered indestructible. "Is the 64-byte ECDSA signature we are proud of too good to be true?" He raised this question while reflecting on whether new vulnerabilities would be introduced soon as the complexity of artificial intelligence increases.

Although there is currently no evidence that AI has undermined ECDSA, RSA or the fundamentals that underpin the security of Bitcoin and Ethereum, Drake pointed out that rapid development deserves forward-looking planning.

Throughout his statement, Drake emphasized that preparation is better than panic, clarifying that the industry still has time to take preventive measures without rushing into action.
