Ethereum client developer Nethermind and Bitcoin Wallet ZEUS applied for the Anthropic Open Source Security Scan Project
Ethereum client development team Nethermind and Bitcoin and Lightning Network Wallet ZEUS are one of several cryptocurrency companies that applied to join Anthropic's new "OSS Scanner" project. The project aims to give open source projects access to security reports generated by their most powerful ai model.
The projects submitted requests to join on Friday, and Anthropic officially launched OSS Scanner on Thursday, with the goal of helping open source developers discover and fix vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them. "These reports will be generated by our strongest models, including Claude Mythos, to provide the greatest defensive advantage for open source projects," Anthropic said in its announcement.
This wave of applications reflects the cryptocurrency industry's urgent need for cutting-edge ai models to withstand increasingly powerful cyber attacks. Cybersecurity experts warn that as more powerful alternatives become more popular, uneven access could put defenders at a disadvantage.
Anthropic stated that OSS Scanner is a voluntary service that continues its work in Project Glasswing. The company pointed out that although it has regularly scanned open source software for vulnerabilities and sent reports after manual reviews, the manual review process is slow,"preventing us from sharing vulnerability information as timely as expected."
OSS Scanner will deliver vulnerability reports to participating projects as soon as possible after the code is scanned. Pull requests in the GitHub repository showed that Nethermind applied to audit its entire codebase, while ZEUS (a Bitcoin and Lightning wallet that supports self-hosting) applied to check security vulnerabilities in its application that could affect payments, private keys, and Lightning service connections. Another applicant is VirtEngine, a decentralized cloud computing market built on the Cosmos SDK.
Other applicants include ai assistants , developers of agent security tools and machine learning infrastructure, as well as projects that provide software development tools, cloud storage and energy system control.
As of press time, no relevant pull requests have been merged.
Background: ai Accelerated defense challenges for the crypto industry
Anthropic said it will conduct a case-by-case evaluation of the project, taking into account its importance to infrastructure and user security, the risk of remote attacks, and how many users or other items rely on its services.
This year, cryptocurrency companies have reported encountering ai assisted attacks. Bitcoin exchange provider Boltz suspended operations in August, saying attackers were developing exploits faster than its team could patch them; cryptocurrency payment service PayPerQ also reported multiple attacks suspected to be driven by ai.
Anthropic warned on Thursday that in the short term,aiThis could give attackers an advantage because the cost of exploiting vulnerabilities is decreasing, while verifying and fixing vulnerabilities remains slow and highly labor-dependent.
