Can TRON defend itself against quantum attacks with $95 billion in stablecoins? Sun Yuchen said he w

Justin Sun said on Saturday that TRON (TRX), which carries about $95 billion of stablecoins, could introduce its quantum-resistant cryptography technology into the mainnet at any time, but he did not give a specific date. [TAG

Core Points

Sun notes that TRON's post-quantum cryptography is online and ready for mainnet deployment on the test net, but no specific launch time has been announced.

Since the June 30 software upgrade, Nile Testnet has supported two post-quantum signature schemes. Previous plans indicated that the mainnet rollout would be completed in the third quarter, which ended on September 30.

Preparations for TRON's main network

Network founder Sun said in an X platform post posted on October 10 that TRON's post-quantum cryptographic capabilities are now running on the test network, and the team is paying close attention to progress in the fields of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. "We are ready to bring anti-quantum capabilities into the main network." He wrote, but did not provide a specific date for activation.

He emphasized that TRON is expected to become one of the few major blockchains to be protected ahead of the so-called "Q-Day"-the moment when a quantum computer may crack current encryption standards. Work on the testnet began on June 30, when TRON's Nile testnet deployed a software version that supports two post-quantum signature schemes: Falcon-based FN-DSA-512 and Dilithium-based ML-DSA-44.

This version covers functions such as transactions, block signatures, point-to-point handshakes, and smart contract verification. On the Nile network, each solution requires a separate committee vote before it can be activated. FN-DSA-512 was first opened to developers in July. Activation of the mainnet requires independent governance approval and no date has been announced.

Quantum threats to Bitcoin

Developers fear that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could undermine the elliptic curve cryptography that protects Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and many other networks. However, there are currently no publicly known machines that have this capability.

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake estimates that by the early 2030s, the probability of such a breach occurring is small but realistic, while warning that the attack schedule is probabilistic rather than deterministic. Binance founder Zhao Changpeng believed earlier this year that the network could deal with risks through new algorithms, saying that "all cryptocurrencies need to do is upgrade" and said there is no need to panic.

This switch comes with costs, because the FN-DSA-512 signature can be up to 667 bytes long, while the ML-DSA-44 signature has a fixed length of 2,420 bytes, compared to the signature size currently used by TRON, which is only 64 to 72 bytes. Larger signatures increase bandwidth and storage burdens, and the impact is particularly significant on a chain with a stablecoin supply of nearly $95 billion (almost all of Tether USDT).

Sun's schedule review
