Ethereum faces bearish signal resonance: ETF suffers a large outflow after falling below the key moving average.
Ethereum is facing resonance with a series of bearish signals: ETH prices have fallen below its 50-day simple moving average (SMA), the spot Ethereum ETF recorded its largest net outflow in a single week for the first time since January 2026, and exchange positions surged by 90,000 ETH in a single day, suggesting that selling pressure may still be building. At the same time, the broader crypto market "Fear and Greed Index" remains stuck in the 64 (greed) range, and the divergence between overall sentiment and specific Ethereum positions is particularly striking.
Selling pressure intensified, and ETH fell below the 50-day SMA
50-day simple moving average, which is one of the closely watched trend filtering indicators in the crypto market. When an asset closes below that moving average after a long period of time, traders often view this as a signal that short-term momentum shifts from buyers to sellers, triggering further profit-taking or sell-off. According to CoinGape data, ETH is currently trading at close to US$2,505, falling more than 7% in the past seven days, and is in this technical form.
According to CoinGape's technical analysis, the first meaningful support level is at US$2,370, while the 100-day SMA is at US$2,200 further below. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has dropped to 39, close to oversold territory but not yet in, meaning there is still room for price downside before a technical rebound becomes a more likely outcome.
Signal released by surge in exchange balances
On-chain data further confirms the bearish view. CoinGlass quoted CoinGape's data as showing that the balance of the Ethereum exchange increased from 11.71 million ETH on October 8 to 11.8 million ETH on October 9, and approximately 90,000 tokens flowed into the trading platform in a single day. Generally speaking, tokens transferred to exchanges are for sale, not for long-term holding.
At the same time, open interest in ETH derivatives also fell simultaneously, falling from 13.29 million ETH to 12.77 million ETH over the same period. Falling prices are accompanied by fewer open interest contracts, indicating that traders are liquidating leveraged long positions rather than creating new short positions. This model is consistent with the characteristics of orderly but continuous shipments.
ETF outflows hit the highest weekly total since January this year
Institutional demand outlook is equally cautious. According to daily traffic data from Farside Investors, the Ethereum Spot ETF recorded a net outflow of US$542.2 million for the week ended October 9, the steepest weekly capital flight since late January 2026.
BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust Fund (ETHA) led the change. Farside's daily data from October 5 to 9 showed that ETHA alone accounted for $477.1 million of the total outflow of $542.2 million, meaning that other issuers collectively contributed approximately $65 million. When the largest and most liquid ETF on the market led the wave of redemptions, it reflected institutional reconfiguration rather than isolated retail panic.
ETF demand diverges from short-term sentiment
ETF flows are critical to ETH because they represent a relatively stable layer of demand: institutions applying for and receiving ETF shares are usually not day traders. As a result, net redemptions of $542 million a week reflect a shift in mid-term belief, rather than just intraday noise. This phenomenon occurred just as it fell below the 50th SMA, indicating that technical and fundamental narratives are reinforcing each other.
As of October 10, the broader Fear and Greed Index recorded 64 (Greed). This is a noteworthy background: the overall sentiment in the crypto market has not collapsed, but specific positions in Ethereum are deteriorating. Such divergences are usually resolved in two ways: either the dominant asset (Bitcoin) ultimately lowers altcoin sentiment, or Ethereum initiates a recovery and drives money back.
The next key ETH signal to watch
Clear signs that confirm or refute the current bearish argument will depend on whether ETH regains its 50-day SMA at the daily close. If the price decisively returns above this level with the expansion of trading volume, the technical break will be neutralized; if it continues to be pressured below this level, the support level of $2,370 will become the next key test point.
ETF flow data for the week of October 13 will be a touchstone for testing institutional demand. If the flow reverses to net inflows, especially from ETHA, it suggests that the wave of redemptions is only a short-term repositioning rather than a sustained exit. On the contrary, if the outflow exceeds US$400 million for the second consecutive week, it represents a structural shift in institutional investors 'view of Ethereum at the current price level and will increase downward pressure, targeting US$2,200 where the 100th SMA is located. According to the conditional technical scenario outlined by CoinGape, if the $2,370 support level falls, ETH could hit the $2,200 level, although this result has not yet been confirmed.
