Three big mistakes when setting up Trust Wallet: mnemonic words should never be saved on your phone

Trust Wallet Quick Start Guide: Build your unmanaged crypto asset library from scratch

Setting up Trust Wallet takes less than five minutes. But how you handle "mnemonic words" in these few minutes will determine the safe fate of your assets. When the application is launched for the first time, the system generates a set of twelve words Secret Phrases. This set of words is the only way you can access all the assets in your wallet. The app does not have a "forget password" feature, nor does the hosting party provide assistance if there is any doubt.

There are three mistakes most often suffered by novices, and all three mistakes occur during the setup phase: saving twelve words on the same phone as a photo or memo; postponing backup until a later time; and sending the first transfer on the wrong network. This guide will sort out the complete path from download to first deposit and answer common questions in daily use: the true cost of in-app conversions, why online lists have become shorter since September 2026, how the German Tax Office treats self-managed assets, and why no regulator is responsible for your wallet.

Overview of Trust Wallet: Wallet without an account, no custodian

Trust Wallet is an unmanaged wallet. The meaning of the term is simple: Your private key is only stored on your device, and the provider does not know about these keys, so it can neither dispose of your balance nor freeze it. This is very different from an exchange account, where coins are held in the name of the exchange and you only have claims on them.

The wallet was developed by Viktor Radchenko in 2017. Binance acquired it in 2018 and later became an independent company owned by Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. It exists as an app for iOS and Android and as an extension for Chrome, Brave and Edge browsers. According to company data, as of 2026, more than 220 million people use it and support more than 100 blockchain networks, including the two largest networks: Bitcoin and Ethereum.

You don't need to open an account in the usual sense. No email registration, no authentication, and nothing to reset. For more on how the app performs in daily use, see our review; this article focuses on the setup steps and subsequent legal and tax applicability.

Trust Wallet Settings: Six-step Guide

Step 1: Download apps only from official channels

Please download apps only from the official App Store, Play Store, or the store that comes with your browser. Fake wallet apps are the most common trap. Their appearance is extremely deceptive and can easily be mistaken for the original app.

Step 2: After application initial settings

is launched, select "Create a new wallet". The app first sets the device lock, which is a password or Face ID. This lock only protects the access rights of the device itself and does not replace the operation of backing up twelve words.

Next, enter settings via the gear icon, select your wallet and start manual backup. The app requests confirmation via code or Face ID and asks you to check multiple boxes to confirm that you understand the meaning of the secret phrase.

Step 3: Backup twelve words

At this time, the application will display these twelve words. Please copy it manually in the exact order. During this process, screenshots and screen recordings are deliberately blocked, not to annoy users: photos in the album end up in the phone's cloud backup and landing on servers beyond your control.

In the last step, re-enter the words in the correct order to check. Only after completing this step will the wallet be set up, and the first amount of funds should be sent to it. If the order is reversed or you deposit funds first and then back up, once the equipment fails, you will have nothing.

Step 4: Receiving address and network selection

The receiving address is the target string for someone to send coins. In the app, select a coin and click "Receive" to find the address. The app then displays the address and QR code.

There's an expensive misunderstanding here: Each blockchain has its own address, and the same string may seem valid on multiple networks. If tokens are sent over a network where the wallet does not support the target address, the funds will fall into a key that the application has never shown. Technically, coins don't disappear; but in practice, you can't access them again unless you bypass them through the private key, and on some chains it's even completely impossible.

The only reliable way is to select coins in the wallet, copy the address there, and ask the sender to choose the same network as the wallet named. For the first transfer to a new address, it is recommended to send a small test amount first and then transfer the full amount.

Step 5: Network and Gas Fees (Changes after September 2026)

The number of supported networks is not fixed. According to reports, starting September 15, 2026, Trust Wallet will remove built-in support for 25 blockchain networks including MultiversX, Polygon zkEVM and Moonbeam. The coins still remain on the blockchain and still belong to you; what disappears is the convenient access portal. For most of these chains, you can manually add them back to the network, but the paths for nine of them are closed.

Therefore, before making an initial deposit, be sure to check whether the chain your tokens are in is still supported by this wallet. For niche chains, the project owner's own wallet is often a more lasting choice.

In addition, a network fee (Gas) is charged for each transfer. The fee is owned by the blockchain, not the wallet provider, and settled in the currency of the associated chain. The practical consequence is that without a small amount of cybercurrency balance, you can't move a token even if it's visible in the app. The best way to send tokens to a new chain is to send a small amount of cybercurrency later.

Step 6: Costs of in-app conversions

Applications can exchange tokens directly without going through an exchange. On its own redemption page, Trust Wallet states that no additional service fees will be charged for redemption; any fees incurred are network fees and fees from the connected third-party provider, which are independent of the wallet provider. The page lists providers such as ThorChain, 1inch, Mimic and Axelar.

Therefore, redemption is not free. The price is included in the fees on the trading platform through which the application is routed, as well as in the spread between purchases and sales. Both will be displayed in a pre-confirmation preview, which states the actual amount arrived. Since this depends on current liquidity rather than a fixed percentage, this preview is the only reliable cost indicator.

Note one feature that has been prominent in apps since 2026: Wallet also offers up to 100 times leveraged futures contracts. This leverage means that if the price fluctuates by only 1% in the opposite direction of your position, the entire invested amount will be cleared. This product has nothing to do with wallet settings as a hosting tool.

In addition, apps can also connect to decentralized applications through the built-in Web3 browser. Approval is required for each connection, allowing the contract to withdraw tokens from your wallet. Such approvals are valid indefinitely, even after you close your website, and they are one of the most common ways for self-managed wallet balances to be stolen. Regularly review the approvals you grant and revoke permissions that are no longer needed.

Taxation and Taxation Department: The one-year holding period also applies to your wallet

For individuals in Germany, cryptocurrencies are considered other assets under the Income Tax Act. According to Article 23(1), paragraph 1, item 2, of the Income Tax Law, if the period between acquisition and disposal does not exceed one year, the sales proceeds are subject to tax. After one year, no matter how big or small the income, it will be tax-free.

After this period, the exemption threshold applies: In accordance with Article 23(3)(5) of the Income Tax Act, if the total proceeds from all private disposals during the calendar year are less than € 1,000, the proceeds are exempt from taxation. The word "threshold" should be understood literally. When the income is 999 euros, you don't have to pay any fees; when you reach 1,000 euros, the full amount becomes taxable income, not just the excess.

Tax impact triggered by transferring to your own wallet

Transferring coins from an exchange to your own Trust Wallet is not considered a sale and therefore does not trigger tax. The one-year timer continues to run from the date of original purchase. The difficulty is evidence: the exchange knows when you buy, but the wallet does not. Without your own records, the dates needed to later establish tax exemptions will be missing.

The German Federal Ministry of Finance reiterated this requirement in a letter dated March 6, 2025 on the treatment of cryptocurrency income tax; cooperation and bookkeeping obligations appear in margin 87. The tax office cannot access your wallet this way because there is no interface and there is no custodian it can inquire about. The burden lies with you: Anyone who cannot prove the date of acquisition will lose the reason for tax exemption in case of doubt. Therefore, when transferring coins, keep the exchange statement and record the receiving address and date.

Changing mobile phones: Import

Wallet does not travel with the device, but with twelve words. On a new device, install the app from the official store, select "I already have a wallet" at launch instead of creating a new wallet, select import via secret phrase, and enter the words in the order they were backed up. Holdings will appear later; individual tokens may need to be manually made visible through a search.

One thing to understand is that your coins are not in the app, but on the blockchain. The twelve words are just their keys, and they also work in other compatible wallet apps. This is the real advantage of open standards because you are not limited to this particular provider.

This is where the risk lies. People who know twelve words don't need your phone or your password. So the overriding number one rule is: Recovery phrases should be written on paper or metal and never put them in photos, memo apps, cloud password managers, or emails to yourself.

Software wallets versus hardware wallets: The boundary between large amounts of money

Trust Wallet is a hot wallet. The key is stored on a device connected to the Internet, which also runs a browser, instant messaging and many other applications. A device lock prevents theft of a phone; but it provides only limited protection against malware on the same device.

In contrast, hardware wallets store keys on a device that is never connected to the Internet and require the press of a button to confirm each transfer. This difference becomes relevant only at the level of the amount at which the loss would cause harm. A rule of thumb has proven to be effective: the amount you move each month can be stored in a software wallet; the amount you plan to hold for years should be stored on a separate device.

This separation incurs no additional costs beyond the price of the equipment and can be done at any time because the coins are on the blockchain and only the keys are moving.

Our view: What is Trust Wallet suitable and not suitable for

Trust Wallet:

Record the date, amount and source of each incoming transfer, because the one-year period stipulated in Article 23 of the Income Tax Law requires you to prove your own evidence.
  3. Set the upper limit. Decide the maximum amount of money you can deposit in the app and move any excess to a separate device.
