The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission clarifies the line between forecasting markets and gambling
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has officially drawn the line between forecasting markets and gambling, including the former into its own regulatory scope and excluding the latter from federal derivatives laws.
The agency issued two measures on Friday. One is a proposed rule that aims to explicitly include event contracts-including contracts related to sports, politics, cultural events and weather-in the legal definition of "swaps." The second is a temporary final rule with immediate effect that excludes casino-like forms of gambling, including sports betting and casino games, from the definition.
