Zero-knowledge aggregation or ZK aggregation is a layer 2 extension solution dedicated to improving the scalability of blockchain. It attempts to achieve this goal by moving calculations and states off-chain, while storing transaction data on-chain. This approach aims to increase transaction throughput and reduce transaction costs, making it a potential solution for developers and users.
ZK Rollups utilizes a cryptographic technique called zero-knowledge proof to verify transactions. These certificates allow transactions to be verified without revealing actual transaction data, and are therefore called \"zero-knowledge\". This is designed to ensure the privacy and security of transactions, while striving to enhance scalability.

How does ZK Rollups work?
ZK Rollups works by transferring calculations and states from off-chain to off-chain networks, while storing transaction data on the chain on a layer 1 network such as Ethereum. State changes are calculated below the chain and then proved valid on the chain using zero-knowledge proofs.
ZK Rollups does not need to publish every transaction on the chain, it only needs to publish valid batches of transactions from the Layer 2 network bundled to the Layer 1 network on a regular basis. This effectively leverages the censorship resistance and security of the Layer-1 network, while also aiming to increase transaction throughput and reduce costs.
Why is ZK Rollups important?
ZK Rollups plays a role in solving one of the main challenges facing blockchain today: scalability. As the number of users and transactions on the blockchain increases, the network may become congested, resulting in slower transaction times and higher costs. ZK Rollups aims to solve this problem by moving calculations and states down the chain, which in turn aims to increase the number of transactions that can be processed per second and reduce transaction costs.
In addition, ZK Rollups inherits the security of their base layer (Layer 1) network connected to settlement. This means that even if calculations and state are moved off-chain, blockchain security and trust minimization will not be affected.
ZK Rollups and other extension solutions
ZK Rollups is not the only extension solution available in blockchain. Other solutions include status channels, sidechains and other types of Rollups, such as Optimistic Rollups. However, ZK Rollups has certain potential advantages compared to these other solutions.
For example, compared to status channels and sidechains, ZK Rollups does not require users to trust third parties. Compared to Optimistic Rollups, ZK Rollups does not require a challenge period to verify transactions, which may result in faster trading times.
